Users In Queensland, Australia Bombard Govt With Support On Eve Of Demerit Bill.

The Brisbane Times reports that Uber users in Queensland, Australia have “bombarded the government and opposition with support for the service” as legislators introduce a bill that “could spell the end of the ride-sharing service” in the state, noting that “Katter Party MPs Rob Katter and Shane Knuth plan on introducing a bill this week” that would dock Uber driver partners “demerit points if caught driving passengers using the service..”

New Australian PM Supports Sharing Economy.

Mashable notes, in a profile of Australia’s new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, that the “centre-right leaning, filthy rich” politician “has long been a supporter of disruption in every market, such as the sharing economy.

ACT Govt Minister Warns Taxi Industry It Can’t Stop Uber.

The Brisbane Times reports that the Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister Andrew Barr has warned the taxi industry that “it cannot stop Uber’s arrival” as cabbies threaten to strike Wednesday in protest of the ride-share company, saying that “The bottom line in all of this is that the government will not be able to arrest our way out of Uber’s entry into the market” and that the government has undertaken a “reform package to include a number of market regulations for Uber.”
