Accessibility compliance strategy

As a platform, we are committed to compliance with the EU’s Accessibility Act (EAA), adhering to standards set out in EN 301 549 and WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Our approach encompasses integration of accessibility considerations into the design phase, regular accessibility testing and audits, and staff accessibility education to embed accessibility values into our organizational culture. We have established policies and procedures to address and rectify accessibility issues that arise.

We identify potential barriers to access through regular internal testing and through user submission. In addition to proactive design and an internal procedure to identify and remediate barriers, we work with LevelAcess to regularly audit our platform against WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines. We take this proactive and remediation approach on our mobile platform for iOS and Android as well as on our webpages.

Uber is committed to promoting continuous compliance and improvement of the accessibility of our apps and webpages. In addition to policies and procedures that uphold WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines, we also ensure users have opportunities to submit feedback on potential access barriers.

How we comply with WCAG

In order to uphold WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines, our developers implement a range of policies and procedures. Learn more details of these practices below:

  1. Uber maintains guidelines for developing content that is Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR). These guidelines include a developer checklist that identifies blockers by usability dimension, description, testing method, and timely remediation expectations.

  2. WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines are embedded into Uber’s base component design. Customized design is discouraged on core screens.

  3. After developers build features or updates that are designed to be accessible, the screens are tested ahead of launch on web and mobile against WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines. These tests are conducted by a specialized internal team. The team uses a proprietary tool to assess compliance. The specialized team then prioritizes and addresses elements requiring remediation.

  4. This specialized team runs regular tests of core screens to identify potential accessibility regressions, which are then logged and addressed.

  5. We value user feedback, and our specialized team has a dedicated process to evaluate and address all reported accessibility barriers.

  6. Uber maintains a contract with LevelAccess to run annual audits and produce documentation that details how our products conform to accessibility standards (VPATs)
