Expanding Transportation Opportunities in Shanghai

In a recent report by the mapping company Autonavi, Shanghai was ranked as the most congested city in China. By 2020, officials predict that Shanghai will be in possession of more than 2.5 million privately operated cars with daily motorized transport activity increasing to make up more than 7 million trips.
There’s no one solution to congestion, but – Uber hopes to play its part to help build a smarter and more efficient Shanghai. This week, we’re taking a major step in that direction by expanding the People’s Uber+ feature to cover nearly 70% of the major metropolitan area.
What is People’s Uber+ ?
People’s Uber+ works by connecting you with another rider that will start and end their trip near the same location. Now, you can expect savings that go further than your wallet to help make Shanghai a more efficient city to live in. While we officially launched PU+ in Shanghai about a month ago – savings to your wallet are already showing an impact worth getting excited about:
As a rider with Uber you can expect to save more money than ever before with PU+. Our driver-partners can also expect to be busier than ever before – and if you’re neither of those – you can still expect to see benefits from the use of PU+.
When users of the feature match with another rider, they use only one car instead of the two they may have previously used. (That’s less cars on the road for you!) Riders on PU+ over the past month have already saved Shanghai more than 172,000 kilometers in duplicate mileage – that’s more than 4 times the circumference of the earth!
What’s next?
In the next couple of months – PU+ will be immediately helpful in reducing the number of cars actually driving on the road. When this happens, residents can also see that the amount of CO2 being emitted while on the road is significantly reduced. In less than a month of operation, PU+ has helped to save more than 21 metric tons worth of CO2!
Over the next couple of years, PU+ will look to form part of the solution to structural problems that plague cities around the world. Currently, riders in Shanghai tend to wait around 5 minutes for a PU+ car to arrive. In the coming years, Uber will continue to add more cars to the platform and users can expect that waiting times for a pickup will continue to go down because there will be more cars in your request area.
When getting an Uber becomes as cheap and as convenient as owning your own vehicle in Shanghai, like it has in other cities around the world, the need for parking lots will decrease. As has been widely covered, Shanghai has a severe parking shortage – the city’s own traffic authorities believe that at least 47% more lots (367,000+) are needed in the city.
A new rule that was set in place in Shanghai last year requires new residential properties inside of the inner urban area to have enough parking lots for at least 80% of its apartments. This shortage of parking lots has in many cases driven up the price of commercial and residential real estate around Shanghai. As such, one way to help lower the pressure on rising real estate costs would be to lower the ever-increasing demand for parking spaces. And as we continue to expand PU+ in Shanghai, we hope that the reliability and affordability of this feature helps to substitute with the need for private transport for individuals.
So, next time you need to get somewhere – maybe try out a trip on PU+. Who knows, you might get a new job, a new friend, or just help to make your city a more efficient place to live.
