A Tale of Two Cities – Shanghai & Hangzhou

The more we use Uber, the more we begin to wonder if everyone around the world uses Uber the same way we do. To answer that question, we can look at two major cities in central China just an hour train ride apart. Shanghai, a city of more than 24 million sits an hour away from Hangzhou — a city of 8.7 million inhabitants but covering almost three times as much area.

Though Uber aims to provide the same level of service everywhere, it is actually the cities themselves that shape Uber to serve them. We’ll look at this problem in Shanghai and Hangzhou by trying to figure out how people use Uber exactly and then who it is in each city that is using Uber.

How do people use Uber?

In Shanghai, the most common day for a rider to take Uber is on a Wednesday while the most popular day of Uber use in Hangzhou is Sunday. This might have something to do with where the users are using Uber to go in both cities. In Hangzhou, a substantially larger portion of the trips tend to be to and from residential areas in the city as compared to Shanghai. Meanwhile, in Shanghai a large portion of the trips go to and from a downtown district like the Jing’an (静安寺) area – with the majority of these trips occurring during a weekday.
If we look at when both cities tend to use Uber – we see the biggest discrepancy is in the nighttime. Between 9pm – 3am, Shanghai does almost 33% more of its total trips while Hangzhou is more spread out throughout the day.

And, almost 15% of all Shanghai riders in the last month hailed from a city other than Shanghai — we can make some assumptions that those users might perhaps be here for business and as such be riding while just 6% of Hangzhou riders in the last month weren’t from Hangzhou.

So now that you know how people use Uber, let’s get into why people use Uber. As you may have heard, we’ve recently launched a new feature in both Hangzhou and Shanghai called People’s Uber+.

Who are the people using People’s Uber+?

People’s Uber+ is a new feature that allows you to request a car and then share that car with another rider heading almost to the same exact location. By using one car instead of two, you get a cheaper price, help the environment by reducing the carbon emission load and also help to reduce congestion by taking an extra car off the road.

We surveyed thousands of People’s Uber+ users in both cities and found that who our riders were and why they chose to ride with us actually varied quite a lot.

Firstly, the majority of People’s Uber+ rider surveyed in Shanghai were female while the majority of People’s Uber+ users surveyed in Hangzhou were male. 70% of Hangzhou respondents described themselves as being under the age of 25 while only 23% of Shanghai respondents stated they were under the age of 25. Presumably, this might have something to do with when and where you choose to ride.
We also asked respondents to tell us why they were choosing to ride with us on PU+. Just 23% of users in Shanghai said they rode for the environmental benefit provided to the city while 62% of Hangzhou users said they rode for the environment. On a similar note, 17% of Shanghai users said they were riding to reducing congestion issues while 55% of Hangzhou users said that was a top concern for them.

But interestingly enough, the biggest concern was the same for both Shanghai and Hangzhou users. It was the amount of time they spent waiting for a ride. We’ve been working on this problem every single day. Since the beginning of the year, the time riders spent waiting for a car has gone down by more than 25%. While we continue to add more cars, we hope to reduce waiting times in these cities and the next.
