Uber Records 1000% Increase in Overseas Trips by Chinese Uber Users During Chinese New Year Holiday
Uber China today released the 2016 Chinese New Year Cross-Border Travel Report, its annual analysis of how Uber users from Mainland China used Uber in other markets around the world during the two-week peak travel period for Chinese holidaymakers around the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday.
900% Year-on-Year Growth in Chinese Users Hailing Rides in other Regions During CNY, 1000% Increase in Number of Trips
Uber’s data for this period illustrates that Uber users from Mainland China used the Uber app to get a ride in 319 cities across 65 countries and regions worldwide. Compared with the 2015 CNY travel period, the number of Uber users from mainland China using the app to hail rides in other countries and regions increased by 882% this year, with the total number of trips taken increased by 973%.
The results demonstrate how Chinese Uber users are increasingly taking advantage of Uber’s unparalleled scale and network, with the average number of trips per user and the number of countries and cities visited by Chinese Uber users also growing sharply compared to last year. This year, Chinese Uber users hailed rides in 319 cities around the globe, more than double the 157 global cities where they used Uber during CNY 2015.
U.S. and U.K. Among The Most Popular Destinations for Uber Users from China
The top ten countries and regions where Uber users from Mainland China hailed local Uber rides were the United States, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Macau, Thailand, and France. The top ten cities where Chinese Uber users hailed local rides were Hong Kong, Taipei, Los Angeles, Singapore, New York, San Francisco, Macau, London, Bangkok, and Sydney. The top six cities of origin for Uber users using the app outside their home region were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Chengdu.
Over 800% Increase in International Users Hailing Uber Rides in Mainland China
During the Chinese New Year, Uber users from 330 cities across 65 countries and regions took Uber trips in Mainland China, whether travelling as tourists or visiting relatives over the New Year. Even users who don’t speak Chinese can hail a ride on their Uber app in China as easily as they would in their home region, making travel even more convenient for visitors to the country.
Based on the number of rides, the most popular 10 destinations for international users were Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Tianjin, Changsha, Wuhan, and Suzhou. The United States and Hong Kong were the top two regions of origin for Uber users visiting China during the holidays. Compared to 2015, the number of international users hailing rides in China during the CNY period increased by 841%, with the total number of trips taken increasing by 969%.
Analysis of this year’s Chinese New Year travel data also shows that:
- A Shanghai registered Uber user hailed the most rides – over 50 trips across a number of different countries, over the two-week CNY period. This probably account for the vast majority of this user’s local travel needs during overseas trips.
- The longest journey taken by a Chinese Uber user internationally was by a Chengdu Uber user, who hailed a ride in Florida, and travelled for more than 360 kilometers on that single trip.
- More than 1,000 Uber users from Mainland China hailed rides in two or more countries during the holiday. One particularly active Uber user from Beijing hailed rides in 6 different countries and regions during the holiday.
- For Shanghai Uber users, the most popular overseas destinations were Singapore and Taipei. Shenzhen and Guangzhou users favoured Hong Kong and Los Angeles. For Chengdu users, Los Angeles and Toronto were on top. And for Beijing users the most popular locations were New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. These three US cities also featured in the top five for users from almost every major city in China.
- The United States was again the most popular destination for Chinese Uber riders, attracting both the most Uber riders from China and also the most rides. 40% of the total number of rides taken by Chinese users outside Mainland China took place in the U.S. The popularity of the United States with Chinese Uber users is most likely due to eased visa procedures for Chinese citizens, and also Uber’s extensive network in the U.S., which now covers 206 cities and more than 80% of the U.S. population.
Uber is the world’s only truly global mobile ridesharing platform. In 400 cities across 68 countries and regions around the world, users can open the app, enter their address or select their location on the app’s built-in map, and hail a car to their location quickly and conveniently. Uber’s sophisticated matching algorithms and powerful backend technology ensure that an Uber car will be at the user’s location within an average of a few minutes. By eliminating local language barriers, saving users the hassle of figuring out local transportation systems, and providing simple and transparent pricing, Uber makes it easy for travelers to explore new and exotic destinations around the globe.
Making the experience even more convenient, Uber constantly adds new payment options for users to choose. In China, for example, over the last year Uber has added UnionPay, Alipay, and Baidu Wallet to its payment options for local users in addition to international credit cards. Shortly before the Chinese New Year holiday Uber and Alipay began rolling out a new cross-border payment function that enables Chinese Uber users to pay for Uber journeys in other markets using their Alipay account, and to be billed directly in RMB. The service is now available in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao, and will be extended to more markets during 2016. This new functionality eliminates the need for Uber users from China to connect a dual-currency credit card with their Uber account in order to use the app outside their home market, making international travel even quicker and easier.
