Protection for emergency medical treatment costs and lost earning opportunities
If you’re an Uber Driver Partner or Delivery Partner in South Africa, Partner Injury Protection can help you with emergency medical treatment expenses and other costs.
You pay nothing
As part of our global commitment to safety we have partnered with AIG Insurance to provide as many Driver Partners and Delivery Partners as possible with protection under this program. That’s why Uber is paying for this program.
Your customers are protected too
While On-Trip in South Africa, your passengers are also automatically protected by the injury protection insurance.

- What are the key features of the cover?
Partner Injury Protection provides cover for specific events that occur while a Partner is On-Trip. The key features are listed below. For full details please read this information from AIG Insurance.
- Emergency Medical Treatment: If an accident happens On-Trip, this cover reimburses you for emergency medical treatment costs you have incurred within the first 48 hours following the accident (e.g. X-ray, operations, medicines), up to a capped sum. In addition, you will be reimbursed for the costs incurred for ambulance and emergency transportation, up to the capped sum.
- Death and Final Expense: In the unfortunate event you suffer fatal injuries as a result of an accident On-Trip, your estate or legal representatives will benefit from a lump sum payment. They will also obtain an additional lump sum amount for final expenses relating to the accidental death.
- Permanent Disability Payments: In the unfortunate event that you suffer a permanent disability as a result of an accident On-Trip, you will benefit from a lump sum payment. The amount depends on the severity of the disability, as determined by AIG Insurance.
- Daily Confinement Payment: In the event you sustain bodily injury and are confined (hospitalized for more than 12 consecutive hours) AIG Insurance shall pay you an inconvenience payment, as soon as reasonably practicable after you provide notification of the Accident details to them.
- Daily Payment Benefit (Injury): If you are hospitalized for more than 24 consecutive hours as a result of an On-Trip accident, and thereafter unable to work because of those injuries, you will receive a daily payment for up to a maximum of 30 days; subject to terms, conditions and limits.
*Note: All above covers are subject to prescribed terms, conditions and limits, which Uber may amend at its discretion.
- What are the limits of the protection?

- Uber may withdraw, update or modify this insurance at any time in its sole discretion.
- This insurance is procured by Uber at its own discretion and cost.
- Driver Partners and Delivery Partners shall not in any way be responsible or liable for any payments or premiums relating to the insurance whatsoever.
- The Driver/Delivery Partner and Uber acknowledge and agree that the Driver/Delivery Partner can decide to opt-out from being covered by the Insurance at any time by indicating they are declining the protection of the cover upon notice or request. Declining cover will not affect your ability to use the Uber App.
- Driver Partners and Delivery Partners are independent contractors. This Insurance does not in any way create an employment relationship or an expectation of employment (including from a labour law, tax law or social security law perspective) between Uber and the Driver Partner or Delivery Partner.
- Why is Uber doing this?
Down Small Sometimes accidents happen on the road. We want to help you protect yourself against unexpected costs and lost earning opportunities due to accidental injuries sustained while you’re On-Trip. We are proud to be industry leaders with AIG Insurance in being your partner on the road.
- What does today’s announcement mean?
Down Small We have been working closely with AIG Insurance to develop new products in South Africa. These product offerings are now available to Driver Partners and Delivery Partners in South Africa, and also to Riders. The new partnership launched on the 1st July 2021. Access to protection takes effect on the same day.
- Can all Uber partners get this protection?
Down Small Yes, all Uber Driver Partners and Delivery Partners are now protected, but you can decline if you prefer (see the next question to find out how).
- I don’t want access to the protection. How do I say “no”?
Down Small It is your decision whether you want this protection or not. You are free to say “no” at any time with no consequences. If you decline, you will no longer be protected by Partner Injury Protection coverage, including help towards emergency medical treatment and lost earning opportunities if you’re in an accident while on an Uber Trip. - Where is Injury Protection provided?
Down Small Injury Protection is provided in the following countries where Uber operates Rides and/or Eats. At 1st July 2021 this includes South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania.

- Does Injury Protection replace my own commercial vehicle motor insurance?
Down Small No, Partner Injury Protection does not provide commercial vehicle insurance nor is it a substitute for comprehensive vehicle insurance. Please contact your insurer, broker or agent if you have any questions regarding your motor insurance.
- What does “On-Trip” mean? When am I protected?
Down Small You are protected from the moment you accept a trip or delivery request, during the trip and through to when the trip ends or the delivery is completed. Please visit this link to see the full policy details.
- How do I activate Partner Injury protection for myself?
Down Small You do not need to do anything. You are protected whenever you’re On-Trip using the Uber App.
- What is not covered?
