This Veterans Day, we want to thank those who have gone above and beyond in their service to our country. You are the reason we enjoy our freedom and we’re thankful for you today and every day.

Below, we’d like to introduce you to a special UberMILITARY driver-partner here in Kentucky. Meet Christopher, a veteran and father. He gave us a few minutes of his time to share why he drives with Uber.

MEET CHRISTOPHER

Born and raised by former Military parents, Christopher served for 8.5 years in the Army after joining in the summer of 2007. His first duty station was in Ft. Riley, Kansas where he was then deployed twice to Iraq as a TUAS Crew Chief in a Military Intelligence Company. From 2008-2009 they were part of the largest launch and recovery area in Iraq, conducting approximately 20 missions a day. In his second tour with the unit, he became a subject matter expert where he managed technical inspections, and operated as the Quality Control NCOIC. He said, “I reenlisted to Fort Carson in Colorado where I was working on turbine engines on helicopters and a squad leader. I was also a Master Driver Instructor. I taught soldiers how to drive on and off-road for convoy operations on 30 different military vehicles.”

Christopher began driving with Uber right after the Kentucky Derby earlier this year. He was searching online for flexible job opportunities for Veterans before leaving the army, as he needed something that would be a good balance for his family and easy on his body. He wanted to get more familiar with Louisville after growing up just across the bridge in Indiana and for him, Uber was the way to go.

“I’m typically woken up by a one-year-old climbing into bed. We have breakfast, play, have some fun outside with our dog. It’s about a 25 minute drive into Louisville for me, but I usually only have to drive 15 minutes towards the city to get a request. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, I start driving around 9am. I care about getting people to where they need to go.”

Driving about 30 hours a week, he says, “the thing that sold me on Uber was that since it has picked up in the area, DUI rates have decreased significantly. In the army, I always stayed sober on the weekends to drive my soldiers from the bars to base. It’s also a great way for me to earn a supplemental income. It allows me to donate to a non-profit charity in the area, Veterans for Harrison County INC.”

“Uber is a service to our community for many reasons but I’d like to highlight my favorite feature. You get into a vehicle with someone whose name you have ahead of time and that makes me feel safe as the driver.”

We are proud to have Christopher on the roads in Kentucky, as well as the many other veterans across country who have chosen to partner with Uber. If you see him on the road, be sure to say hi!
