In honor of International Women’s Day, we’re recognizing the accomplishments and triumphs of women in the LA food scene. These individuals demonstrate hard work, leadership, and passion, which result in an impact that extends beyond their restaurants. We asked them to share advice for aspiring female chefs and restaurateurs. Prepare for some food for thought!

We also invite you to join us in giving back to our community. Today, order from select restaurants led by influential women in LA’s food scene and UberEATS will donate $1 for every order to The Midnight Mission’s new Crisis and Bridge Housing Center, which serves women facing homelessness in LA. Brooke Williamson – Playa Provisions & The Tripel

As the Executive Chef and Owner of Hudson House, The Tripel and Playa Provisions, Brooke’s influence in the LA food scene cannot be overstated. Beginning her culinary career at the Epicurean Institute of Los Angeles, she later went on to acquire skills in pastry making under the tutelage of Michelin-starred Chef Ken Frank. She has since carved out an impressive resume, such as becoming the youngest female to ever cook at the James Beard House and winning Top Chef season 14.

“The challenges of the hospitality industry are abundant, regardless of gender. That being said, I have always seen being female in this industry as an opportunity to prove myself. I have never let my gender define who I am in the kitchen, but rather used it as motivation to do more. Look for ways to separate yourself from the rest and showcase your individuality. Femininity is beauty in the details, and something to be proud of.”

Erica Tucker – Sweet E’s

Erica Tucker has filled our bellies with sweet treats from Sweet E’s Bake Shop since 2010. Her passion for baking started young, spending time in the kitchen baking with her Grandma “Mimi” and Mom “Momo”. After leaving Texas to pursue an acting career in California, it didn’t take long for her to realize that opening a bake shop was her true calling. After much encouragement, Sweet E’s was born in 2010. It has since become one of LA’s go-to bakeries and has featured on numerous TV shows, such as Cupcake Wars and Kim Kardashian’s Wedding Special.

“My dad always told me – “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” It has become an invaluable lesson in both my personal life and professional career. Strategic planning helps me find balance between leading Sweet E’s and spending quality time with my family.”

Dina Samson – Sotto

Dina has given a firm hand in bringing famed Italian restaurant Sotto to life, acting as the managing partner and owner along with her husband Chef Steve Samson. After spending 15 years in the finance world, Dina came to LA seeking a change of scenery. Mentored by restaurateur Bill Chait, Dina stepped in as Sotto’s first general manager and soon took the lead on Sotto’s marketing and finance efforts. She also miraculously finds time to raise the couple’s five year old twins.

“Do not be afraid of changing the way things have always been done. Stay centered by understanding and not compromising your personal values.”

Kei Okumura – Sugarbird Sweets

Kei has brought a Franco-Japanese essence to the LA food scene, with the opening of her bespoke dessert and confectionery store Sugarbird Sweets. With a long list of achievements, highlights include graduating at the top of her class at École Supérieure de Cuisine Française in Paris, and training at top Michelin starred restaurants in Paris. She has since expanded her repertoire with an exclusive line of artisanal teas, and specializes in rustic modern afternoon tea catering.

“Always surround yourself with good friends and fellow entrepreneurs of all trades to bounce ideas with. They’ve probably gone through similar paths and could offer amazing insights and ideas you wouldn’t have had the bandwidth to come up with yourself. In the meantime, be prepared to grow thick skin but remember to make time for yourself and get a pedicure.”
