We’re sorry, Austin—for leaving the way we did; for letting an honest disagreement about regulations and consumer choice turn into a public fight; and most of all, for not being able to serve you for the last year. It was never our intention, but we let down drivers, riders, and the broader Austin community. We’ve spent the last year listening carefully and learning from the mistakes we made. While we can’t change how we got here, we can and will commit to getting it right this time around.

Serving and celebrating cities is at the very core of our mission to make transportation reliable and affordable everywhere, for everyone. Investing in and regularly improving our technology is a big part of making that happen, but having a local team on the ground dedicated to drivers and riders is what makes the Uber experience so seamless. We are that local team, and we are proud to call Austin our home. Whether it’s improving access to transportation for Austinites in need of wheelchair accessible vehicles or finding unique ways to support a worthy cause, we are driven by the opportunity to make our city better.

Texas recently became the forty-second state to regulate ridesharing at the statewide level. Democratic and Republican lawmakers from both urban and rural parts of the state supported this legislation because of its potential to help improve mobility in their cities and create greater economic opportunity for their constituents. We will be working harder than ever to deliver against that promise in Austin—accessibility, urban mobility, and congestion are just a few of the important challenges that will call for closer collaboration between the city, non-profit organizations, and the technology community in the years to come. We are excited to participate in these conversations, and wherever possible, support innovative solutions to be a true partner to the city.

Before we get to work, we want to thank all of the drivers who make ridesharing a reality in Austin: Tens of thousands of people rely on you to get around safely every week, and this city isn’t the same without your hard work and kindness. Earning back your trust is our number one priority. Whether you plan to drive with Uber in the future or not, thank you for everything you do for this amazing city.

Austin, we know that we have a lot of work to do, but we couldn’t be more excited for the road ahead. We hope you’ll come along for the ride.
