Ukraine has now endured more than nine months of horrific war since Russia’s full-scale invasion. Attacks have devastated cities, destroyed families, and unleashed a refugee crisis unlike any Europe has seen since World War II.

In the days following the February invasion, Uber made a commitment to help for as long as the war continues. So as we approach the end of the year, we’re launching a new donation campaign spotlighting the bravery and selflessness of Ukrainian drivers and providing an update on our key support initiatives in 2022.

Here are some of the actions we’ve taken so far:

  • Expanded Uber services to 18 cities across Ukraine: Since the start of the war we’ve expanded our services in Ukraine, doubling our geographic footprint from 9 cities to 18 in order to provide communities with greater access to essential transportation. Uber is operating in Ukraine at a loss in order to offer lower prices to riders for their essential daily transportation needs, and higher earnings for drivers. During the war, more than 25,000 drivers have been able to use the app to earn an income for their families. We will continue to work in close coordination with local city governments to launch additional cities as soon as it is possible and safe.
  • Provided more than 100,000 free rides to Ukrainian refugees, internally displaced families, and aid workers: We’ve used both free on-demand car trips and scheduled  minibus routes to help  more than 100,000 people reach safe locations away from the fighting or across the borders into neighboring countries. We’ve also provided access to free transport for local Ukrainian NGOs supporting internally displaced families as well as the in-country staff of leading international refugee relief agencies, like UNHCR.
  • Rolled out free transport for medical staff and patients at 100+ hospitals, and delivered medications for those in need: With local public transport networks coming under increasing strain, we partnered with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to provide access to free transportation for doctors, nurses, and frontline healthcare workers at more than 100 hospitals across the country, as well for as patients requiring help to reach regular treatments such as chemotherapy and dialysis. We’re also providing free deliveries of discounted medications to older and housebound Ukrainians.
  • Built a customized logistics platform for United Nations relief agencies and delivered more than 220 truckloads of emergency food, medicine, and winter shelter supplies at no cost: We’ve built customized tech platforms for the World Food Programme and UNHCR to dispatch vehicles on demand to their central warehouses in Ukraine, calculate delivery routes, coordinate with recipients, confirm drop-offs, and provide tracking and inventory updates in real time. To date, we’ve helped to deliver more than 220 truckloads of supplies across Ukraine, with recent deliveries focused on emergency winter shelter supplies (e.g. blankets, stover, tarps to seal shattered windows) for the hardest-hit suburbs of Kyiv and eastern frontline areas.
  • Built a custom version of the Uber app to provide free on-demand transport to teams of conservationists from Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture to locate and protect thousands of artifacts of irreplaceable value to Ukrainian cultural heritage and independent national identity. We’ve partnered with the US Department of State and Smithsonian Institution to transport the Ministry’s experts more than 40,000 kilometers to reach more than 200 cultural and historical sites in cities, towns, and villages across Ukraine. The teams have secured artworks, archives, and other artifacts on-site where possible, while evacuating those at greatest risk for storage in secure locations.
  • More than $5 million – and counting – in charitable donations raised to support Ukrainians in need: In addition to our direct work on the ground, we’ve raised more than $5 million via a combination of donations from users worldwide and grants from Uber, which have been channeled through our partner international relief agencies on the frontline of the humanitarian aid effort: International Rescue Committee, Red Cross, UNHCR, UNICEF, and World Food Programme. In early December, we launched a new donation drive to raise funds to allow the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to buy urgently needed ambulances. Uber will match every donation up to $1 million.

As this terrible war stretches into a new year, the people of Ukraine need and deserve the world’s support more than ever. Uber will continue to stand with Ukraine in 2023–and for as long as the war continues.
