Neighborhood Love: Manoa Edition
Written byEach state has its typical college town, those seasonal cities where, during the months of September through May, business blooms and music booms at all hours of the night. In Oahu you get the best of everything packed in one island where each neighborhood has its own style. For example the neighborhood of Manoa has become the defacto quaint college town for University of Hawaii at Manoa students. The first signs that back-to-school week has started are all around us–just look at the size of the line outside Morning Glass Coffee, the sudden surge in bulging backpacks, Birkenstocks, and boardshorts crossing the road, the raging Taco Tuesday crowd at Serg’s Mexican Kitchen. Regardless of what you’re looking for, Manoa offers something to satisfy from morning to night. Check it out for yourself!
To tap into everyone’s inner island explorer, we’ve teamed up with FLUX Hawaii & Nella Media Group to curate some of the best from every part of the island’s favorite neighborhoods starting with Manoa.
By taking Uber rides to and from Manoa, you’ll be entered to win a $100 gift card from Tropics Tap House.

This neighborhood bar transforms from mellow tap house on the weekdays to the most popular spot for Honolulu’s college crowd on the weekends. Sporting an extensive lineup of more than 50 beers on tap, as well as a full kitchen, Tropics is one of the few locales on island where beer lovers can truly get their fix. Catch up with friends while watching the big game, or listen to roots reggae with Mike Love. The happiest hours are daily from 4 to 6 p.m., when $8 beers magically become $4, and scratch margaritas only set you back 5 bucks.
An open-air cafe with a rustic vibe, the Morning Glass menu focuses on simple preparation, using seasonal, local, and sustainable products made from scratch when possible. This hometown café offers a selection of coffees from various international roasters, and each cup is freshly ground and prepared to order—not recommended if you’re dashing to class, since each jolt of this special java takes five minutes to prepare! Don’t pass up their freshly baked honey butter biscuits or their famous egg-a-muffin, a spin on a well known classic, but with a farm fresh egg, applewood smoked bacon, and tomato jam on a house-made English muffin. Morning Glass is the perfect spot for a weekend brunch, though plan on coming early (or to wait) as this place gets jam-packed—and for good reason: macaroni and cheese pancakes, biscuits and gravy with Shinsato Farms pork sausage—need we say more?
Aloha Boardshop
Whether you’re surfing the net or the nearest swell, Aloha Boardshop provides surfers of all kinds with anything they may need need. This Puck’s Alley boardshop is a great place to get spanking new gear, from boardshorts to skateboards. Along the wall, novice and expert surfers can feast their sunburned eyes on an incredible selection of top quality stock and custom surfboards, created by some of the best, including Ben Aipa, Glenn Minami, Dick Brewer, Mitsu, and Cino. Used boards are also available at low prices for those on a tight budget.
One of the only places where vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters are simultaneously filled with joy at the prospect of dining is Andy’s Sandwiches. Don’t want cheese on your Manoa Delight (this heck of a sandwich is loaded with avocado, mushrooms, tomatoes, melted cheese, sunflower seeds, and papaya seed dressing)? No problem, auntie at the counter always asks if you would like to substitute for a few slices of cucumber instead. Not a sammich person? No worries, Andy’s serves up exceptional banana pancakes, cherry strudels, smoothies, salads, and acai bowls, too.
Serg’s Mexican
Two words: Taco Tuesday. With two-dollar tacos, $2.50 fish tacos, and a BYOB setting, college students and Manoa residents delight over Serg’s cheap delicious tacos and mexican beer. Alternative nights of the week are just as suitable for a Mexican fiesta at Serg’s. Meat lovers will drool over their carne asada plate, served with ranchero beans, nopales (a prickly pear salsa), rice, and tortillas. Not a meat fan? The cheese enchiladas are a solid option, and the choice of red or green sauce is always a good sign.
