For Rosa, it’s all about family. With 14 siblings and 2 daughters of her own, Rosa has always been surrounded, and supported by the ones she loves. Originally from Nicaragua, she followed her mom and sister to the U.S. in the 1980s. With her family spread across North America and Central America, she’s grateful to only live a few minutes from her mom and sister.

Rosa and her family

“My sister lives down the street and my mom is a 10 minute drive away. We do everything together. Family… it’s everything. They always comes first,” said Rosa.

When you ask Rosa about her 2 daughters, her entire face lights up. A proud mom, she’s the first to tell you about her older daughter’s accomplishments as a junior high school counselor and her youngest daughter’s recent graduation from the University of Washington. “My oldest was the first in our family to go to college. She was the first to graduate. She was the first to get her Master’s degree. I raised them as a single mom… I did it!” Rosa exclaimed with a beaming smile.

To support her family Rosa has been behind the wheel helping people get around Seattle. Before driving with Uber, Rosa drove people to and from their appointments at nearby hospitals and clinics.

“I love helping people. I’m giving back by getting people where they need to go.” – Rosa, driver-partner

Being tied to a set schedule meant she wasn’t able to take care of her mom or see her sisters and daughters as much as she liked. It was a co-worker, who also drives with Uber, who told her to sign up to drive. Initially she was driving part time but fell in love with the flexibility and has been a full-time driver-partner since May, 2015. “For me it’s all about the flexibility. I can go see my family and I don’t have to worry about getting my shifts covered. It’s freedom,” Rosa commented as she told us about her upcoming trip back to Nicaragua.

Rosa is heading back home this week to see her siblings, something she hasn’t done in years. Her words of wisdom before she walked out the door? “I want to see more Latina women as driver-partners. I want to see that community driving with me. It’s a perfect opportunity for mothers, students, and wives.”
