Known for coastal Mexican food paired with craft cocktails and beer, La Grange has become one of the most popular spots in Montrose. We met with COO Jake Rainey to learn about the history of the location and what makes their bar and restaurant unique.

La Grange is located in what was a horse hospital built in the ’30s. Some windows are higher than normal so that the horses could see the moonlight. It later became EJ’s, an iconic Montrose bar that was open for more than 40 years. The redesign was focused on maintaining the original structure, including the small koi pond outside. Sliding glass doors create an al fresco feel for diners and the front bar is made from the oldest and largest Sycamore tree in Harris County.

“People love the decor and the patio,” says Rainey. “When you’re outside, you feel like you’re literally in a different place and not in the center of Houston.”

La Grange’s cocktails are made with fresh juice (squeezed daily) while all of the food is made in house. In addition to standard Mexican fare like enchiladas and fajitas, Chef Daniel Ajtai prepares Sashimi style salmon with fresh mint and other coastal favorites.

“Our food, craft cocktails, and craft beer are all reasonably priced,” Rainey points out. “We’re very casual and unpretentious, and the crowd is always very diverse.”

Its location along Ralph Street (near Westheimer Rd.) makes it easy to Uber to or from.
