Driven Women in Omaha – Kim
Written by‘I now feel so confident about the safety, I am encouraging my 75 year old mom in Indiana to sign up. I’m very protective of my Mom–my Mom’s a great grandmother. I would never put her in a situation that would be unsafe.’
To celebrate International Women’s Day and History Month, we wanted to share the story of a an inspiring female driver partner in Omaha.
Kim, a partner since October of last year, graduated from Purdue with a degree in psychology. She recently moved from Chicago to Omaha, and while figuring out what to do with her profession, wanted to make extra money and meet new people. Kim has become familiar with Omaha by driving with Uber, and finds that driving gives her plenty of moments to pique her psychology interest:
‘Being a psychology major, Uber is perfect. There is such a huge demographic of people that you pick up. You pick people up from every part of the world. It doesn’t matter what income level they come from and what country they come from – they all have one thing in common, they all need Uber.’
Kim feels that driving with Uber ‘[is] the dream job for single mothers…the flexibility is one of the things I love most.’ Along with the convenience provided by driving with Uber, Kim feels strongly about her safety while on the Uber platform:
‘I was worried about the safety factor, but once I did it and I saw how Uber is constantly in contact–they know who you’re picking up, they know when they get in your car, they know when they get out of your car. I have never had a moment where I felt unsafe–never. And I’ve picked up people at 4 in the morning and I have picked up drunk people–and everyone has been fine. And I now feel so confident about the safety, I am encouraging my 75 year old mom in Indiana to sign up. I’m very protective of my Mom – my Mom’s a great grandmother. I would never put her in a situation that would be unsafe.‘
For women thinking about driving and who haven’t taken the next step, Kim offers this advice: ‘It’s sort of like standing on the edge of a swimming pool, and you dip your toe and it’s a little bit cold. You just have to do it, just jump in. You’ll immediately see how easy it is and you’ll be over your hurdle and you’ll never look back.’
Outside of driving with Uber, Kim is a singer in a band based in Chicago. Kim has been singing her whole life: ‘…it’s something I will never give up, it’s what I was born to do. I fly home twice a month to do shows. Uber gives me flexibility to do that,’ Kim said.
Women are seeking work opportunities that can fit around their life – becoming a driver partner with Uber provides new ways for women to earn on their terms, all while balancing family time, work, passion projects, and education. We’re excited to empower women in the cities we serve globally. Along the way, we look forward to learning and getting to know more amazing partners like Kim.
