Moving the Motor City: A Case Study with Detroit Manufacturing Systems
Written byFor some, a lack of transportation options can make it difficult to find a job. And for those who are employed, a lack of transportation options can make it difficult for them to keep a job.
This impacts employers as well as workers. According to Crain’s Detroit, “The loss of a single employee — and the expense of hiring a replacement — can cost companies more than $3,400.”
In mid-August, Uber and Detroit Manufacturing System (DMS) piloted a program to help employees get to and from work with Uber. With such affordable rates for uberX rides in Detroit, DMS saw the value in providing an affordable, on-demand transportation option. The company set up an Uber For Business account to provide employees rides to and from work with centralized billing and reporting.
“Uber providing transportation needs to our employees has had an outstanding impact on Detroit Manufacturing Systems’ employees’ attendance. Uber partnered with us and provided a free trial, so our employees had a feel for how much their transportation would cost, ” says DMS Director of Human Resources, Monica Brand.
Nearly 40 employees who previously were without a reliable or flexible ride to work participated in the program. These participants took over 800 trips and traveled over 6,000 miles in a span of three months.
“Since then, we have had an increase in attendance from employees with trouble getting to work. Uber provides an overall design that helps us easily summarize our employees’ transportation expenses and payroll deduct them on a weekly basis. We have been very impressed with Uber and all the efforts that it provides. We will continue to use Uber to get our employees to work in a timely fashion,” said Brand.
