Uber’s mission is to connect everyone to safe, reliable rides that arrive within minutes at the tap of a button. We know that riders with disabilities face a variety of problems accessing on-demand transportation in Honolulu. And while these problems are not unique to our city, there is more that can be done and Uber is proud to be a part of the solution with uberASSIST.

WHAT IS uberASSIST?

uberASSIST expands accessibility services for riders. Driver-partners have received education on how to assist riders into vehicles, and can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters. Please note, however, that uberASSIST vehicles are not equipped with wheelchair accessible ramps.

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. Open your Uber app.
  2. Select “uberASSIST” on the vehicle icon slider.
  3. Set your location and request your ride!

PRO TIP: After requesting, contact your driver ahead of time with any specific needs.

Uber’s technology contributes to safety by creating accountability and transparency where there was none. A cashless experience means those that are blind have comfort and transparency in payment processing in knowing they’ll receive an emailed receipt. uberASSIST is part of the solution in providing safe and reliable rides to the underserved community of the blind.

To help the National Federation of the Blind of Hawaii celebrate White Cane Day, we’re donating $1 of each ride taken on uberASSIST between October 1 through October 15 to the National Federation for the Blind of Hawaii!

The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities; to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world; and to honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired.
