It’s the season of love. To celebrate our Valentine’s Day Sweet Week, we chatted with a few of our EATS partners who own their business with their significant other. Learn about the owners of Soi and Food and Sh*t, and how the landline telephone, Fremont Sunday Market, and their shared love of good food brought them together.

Introducing…

Chera Amlag & Geo Quibuyen, Owners of Food & Sh*t and Hood Famous Bakeshop

When and how did you first meet?

We’ve known each other for 22 years. We started dating around the time the CrazySexyCool album was first released. We met through an ancient form of adolescent communication called the landline telephone, introduced by our mutual friend Melissa who called us both on 3-way calling and then left us to talk to each other.

When did you know it was true love?

There was not a particular moment, but having grown up so much together we are constantly rediscovering new facets of our love. However, the chemistry was immediate from the moment we met.

What do you like to make the other person?

Geo likes to make new dishes we haven’t tried before and Chera likes to buy cheese and wine to go along with it.

What’s it like to run a business with your partner?

It is challenging and rewarding at the same time. This is actually our first project we’ve run together. We’ve had to learn both to compartmentalize some aspects of personal life from business, but also embrace the way our relationship can strengthen our communications, creativity and decision making.

What is your favorite thing about running a business with your partner?

The creative process & seeing ideas come into fruition. We are passionate about food, but equally excited to tell a story behind each dish we make.

How are you going to celebrate Valentine’s day?

We’re going to watch the Walking Dead mid-season premiere & cook a zombie themed dinner.

If your significant other was a dish (appetizer, main course, dessert… or all three, you decide!) what would they be and why?

Geo says Chera would be ube because she’s my bae and ube is versatile and naturally sweet.

Chera says Geo would be halo-halo because if you could take a picture of his brain that’s what it would look like.

Introducing…

Gabe & Yuie Wiborg, Owners of Soi

When and how did you first meet?

We met at Bellevue square 10 years ago, I was wearing a beer Chang t-shirt (one of the national beers of Thailand) and was walking around the mall when she noticed the Thai writing on my t-shirt.

When did you know it was true love?

When we started at the Fremont Sunday Market as a small Thai food booth. Every weekend, getting up to do the same thing we both love to do.

What’s it like to run a business with your partner?

It is both challenging and rewarding–learning how to separate the business from the the time we spend together outside of the restaurant can be challenging. But also fun to be able to collaborate on ideas and opportunities that grow ourselves, the business and our employees.

What is your favorite thing about running a business with your partner?

We’ve been able to see each other grow in ways we’d never get to see otherwise.

If your significant other was a dish (appetizer, main course, dessert… or all three, you decide!) what would they be and why?

She be Khaopod Tod–corn fritters. First of all, she can eat corn for any meal at any time where ever we are. Second, we serve it with a sweet chili sauce topped with peanuts–sweet and spicy at the same time; and a little nutty.
