A New Drive for Opportunities in Our Neighborhoods
Written byWhen Uber came to Boston almost four and half years ago, it was just the beginning of Uber’s impact across the globe. We’re now in over 400 cities in over 60 countries on 6 continents helping millions of people get where they need to go more affordably and more reliably and finding a new source of income that works around their needs, schedules and towards their goals. But that doesn’t mean our work in Boston is done.
“I partner with Uber because it is helping me achieve my life goals and making my dreams a reality.”
– Arthur, Jamaica Plain resident, College student & Uber Partner-Driver
Today, we’re excited to launch a new initiative to connect more people with the entrepreneurial opportunities furnished by the Uber platform in some of the neighborhoods that make up the heart of Boston: Dorchester, Roxbury, West Roxbury, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale and Jamaica Plain.
In 2016, our goal is get 5,000 residents of these neighborhoods on the road, earning money and moving our city as part of our new “Driving Our Neighborhoods” initiative.
This new initiative comes on the heels of the announcement of the forming of the Uber Boston Community Action Committee in February. As this committee of community leaders comes together, we will look to them for guidance on how Uber can work with these communities to maximize impact for the people and local economies throughout Greater Boston.
To drive this commitment forward, we’re partnering with the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, a nonprofit organization that works to deliver services and programs which aim to increase self-reliance, specifically in the area of workforce development. Together, we will reach thousands of urban residents through local events, skill-building courses and information sessions in an effort to ensure that the opportunity of entrepreneurship is available to all.
“Uber is creating thousands of new opportunities for communities throughout Greater Boston. This commitment to opening new doors will help more people build a path to success and grow our communities from the inside, out.”
– Darnell Williams, Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts
Uber has helped make communities and neighborhoods throughout Greater Boston more accessible while increasing economic opportunities for thousands of driver partners throughout the Commonwealth. Some of the greatest economic impact is occurring in communities like Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale and Roxbury and we are excited to introduce “Driving Our Neighborhoods” to keep working toward making that impact even greater.
“Partnering with Uber lets me earn important extra income that gives me a sense of security as well as independence. This opportunity is what I make of it and I am excited for where it will take me next.”
– Valarie, Roxbury resident, Uber Partner-Driver
At Uber, we love to celebrate the hundreds of cities we call home. In fact, it’s part of our core mission. Partnerships and programs like “Driving Our Neighborhoods” play an important role in helping our cities continue grow and our residents thrive by increasing economic growth and stability, on their own terms.
