Uber Assist provides accessible transportation across Japan using Universal Design Toyota Japan Taxi vehicles, equipped to accommodate wheelchairs and additional mobility needs. With trained drivers ready to assist, you can enjoy a safer, more comfortable ride wherever you go.
How to ride with Assist
1. Open the app and enter your destination in the "Where to?" box.
2. Confirm your pickup and destination, then select Uber Assist. (Make sure there is enough space at pickup and drop-off for safe ramp deployment. Drivers may decline if conditions are unsafe.)
3. If an Assist driver is available and accepts your ride request, you’ll be able to track their arrival on the map in your app.
4. When the driver arrives, they will assist with ramp setup, boarding, securing or stowing the wheelchair, and safe entry into the vehicle.

Can I use a wheelchair?
Yes, you can.
Drivers can assist with loading items that fit safely into the vehicle, including:
- Wheelchairs
- Walkers
- Strollers
- Large luggage, etc
Can I request for someone else?
Yes, you can. You can easily request a ride for a family member. In the Uber app, tap "Where to?", then tap the "For me" option at the top of the screen. Select "Add a rider" to choose their contact information and request the ride on their behalf.
What kind of certifications do the drivers have?
In Japan, drivers of Universal Design (UD) Toyota JPN Taxi undergo specific, standardized training to ensure they can safely assist passengers in wheelchairs.

What level of assistance is provided?
Certified drivers will provide the following support.
- Pick-up assistance: Guiding you safely from your selected pick-up spot to the vehicle.
- Getting in and out: Assisting you in transferring safely from a wheelchair to the taxi
- Loading equipment: Stowing your foldable wheelchair, walker, or stroller in the trunk.
Please note: The driver cannot provide support inside your home (or building) .
How much does it cost?
The pricing is the same as a standard dispatch, and metered fares apply. A vehicle request fee may also be added depending on the taxi company.
Is this a specialized welfare transport vehicle?
No, it is not.
Uber Assist uses standard vehicles (The Universal Design Japan Taxi, designed for wheelchair accessibility) driven by specially certified drivers.
Do I need a disability certificate to use this ride option?
No, you do not. Please note that if you are using a restricted pick-up area—such as a designated handicapped space at an airport—the facility's staff may require you to present a certificate to access that specific location.

Conditions and Guidelines for Wheelchair
- Length:1,200 mm or less
- Height: 1,300 mm or less
- Width:700 mm
- Total Weight: Within the ramp’s weight capacity
*Total weight of Wheelchair + Passenger + Luggage + Caregiver (assisting on the ramp)
Note: The ramp's weight capacity varies depending on the vehicle, and is limited to either "Up to 200 kg" or "Up to 300 kg"
In addition to wheelchairs that exceed the specified dimensions (700 mm width, 1,200 mm length, 1,300 mm height) or the total weight limit, we may decline boarding for safety reasons if your wheelchair falls under any of the following conditions:
- Some overseas-made electric wheelchairs
- Sports wheelchairs with angled wheels (camber angle).
- Wheelchairs with mudguards or wheel covers that block the space needed to pass the securing seatbelts through.
- Wheelchairs that exceed 1,200 mm in length when using the reclining function during boarding.
Time Considerations : Boarding and exiting may take several minutes to ensure everyone’s safety
