Counsel, AI & Algorithms, EMEA Legal

Legal
Amsterdam, Netherlands |
London, United Kingdom

About the Team

The EMEA Legal Team is a high-octane, collaborative group of legal pioneers tackling some of the most fascinating, first-of-their-kind legal challenges on the planet, including artificial intelligence. While headquartered in Amsterdam, the team includes members spread across the EMEA region, working in close collaboration with each other and with the wider Global Legal Team.

As part of the AI & Algorithms sub-group, you will sit at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and rapidly evolving global regulation. Working closely with our Global AI team in the US and engineering hubs in Amsterdam, we don't just react to the law - we help define what responsible, scalable tech governance looks like in practice.

About the Role

We’re looking for an exceptional, forward-thinking lawyer to join us either in London or Amsterdam. This isn’t a passive advisory role. You will be the legal architect helping Uber navigate the dawn of major regulatory shifts, including the EU’s AI Act and the Platform Work Directive.

You’ll partner directly with product managers, data scientists, and engineers to transform complex, ambiguous legal text into actionable product roadmaps. If you thrive in high-stakes environments, love solving puzzles with no historical precedent, and want to shape how one of the world's most iconic tech companies deploys AI responsibly at a massive scale - this is the job for you.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled lawyer with AI, privacy, technology, or compliance experience to help shape Uber’s approach to AI governance, engage with key stakeholders, and build out scalable legal frameworks for AI risk management. This position requires a strategic approach to developing the partnerships, structures and internal processes necessary to manage the development and deployment of AI-powered processes and products at global scale, whilst navigating the unique and ever-evolving regulatory challenges in all our EMEA markets. It also requires someone with the know-how to provide clear tactical guidance to legal and non-legal stakeholders in an understandable and actionable format.

What You'll Do

  1. Advise on interpretation of the EU AI Act and Platform Work Directive, working closely alongside the business to drive regulatory compliance, responding to regulator requests and future-proofing Uber’s EMEA business.
  2. Monitor pending legislation across the EMEA region and work closely with our EMEA Public Policy team to advocate for Uber, actively tracking best practices regarding AI governance, ensuring our systems remain compliant as laws change. Effectively communicate potential impacts to colleagues across roles and seniority levels.
  3. Own, manage and autonomously drive forward product counseling in relation to product launches in EMEA, including providing advice to the Amsterdam-based engineering team. Deliver tailored advice and training to employees working on AI systems and products.
  4. Collaborate cross-functionally to develop and review product specifications and system changes to identify potential policy, safety or legal issues related to Uber’s existing and planned AI deployments.
  5. Provide pragmatic advice and risk mitigation recommendations to cross-functional teams.
  6. Lead the development of legal guidelines, checklists and controls to ensure new and existing products meet key standards, and support execution against and enforcement of such standards. This will include ethics, consumer protection, trust and safety controls, and IP.
  7. Work with external legal counsel and technical experts, as required, to advance understanding, set appropriate controls, and address risks.
  8. Collaborate closely with colleagues on other legal teams at Uber, including specialists across Privacy and Cybersecurity, Employment, Safety, IP, Litigation and Competition.
  9. Be an active and trusted business partner to a wide variety of leaders and stakeholders across Uber. It's our job to peer around corners for the business and ensure that we are well-positioned for the future.
  10. Be a strong communicator and collaborator to support and develop a high-performing, diverse team that achieves our legal and business priorities.

Basic Qualifications

  1. Minimum of five (5) years of legal experience in private practice and/or in-house.
  2. Strong academic credentials and law degree from a top law school or university and qualification to practice law in the UK or an EU country
  3. Professional fluency in written and spoken English
  4. Role is based in London or Amsterdam

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Deep familiarity with AI laws, regulations and governance frameworks in the EMEA region, such as GDPR, the EU AI Act, and other emerging standards.
  2. Experience providing legal counsel on AI, data privacy, or algorithmic decision-making in an in-house, government, or law firm setting.
  3. Broad understanding of key issues in data governance, ethics, fairness, and equity for machine learning and AI.
  4. Strong ability to analyse complex legal and regulatory issues and communicate clearly and effectively with non-legal stakeholders, translating complex legal issues and ambiguity into straightforward advice.
  5. Experience working cross-functionally with product, engineering, policy and compliance teams (in-house experience at a global technology company strongly preferred), with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others.
  6. Excellent project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and perform at the highest standard within nimble, rapidly changing and complex environments.
  7. Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgement, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative and think two steps ahead.
  8. Growth mindset, with a passion for AI's potential to positively impact the world in a trustworthy and ethical way, with a realistic assessment of its risks and limitations.
  9. Embody the highest standards of integrity, ethics and accountability.
  10. Enthusiasm about Uber and our mission!

Uber's mission is to reimagine the way the world moves for the better. Here, bold ideas create real-world impact, challenges drive growth, and speed fuelds progress. What moves us, moves the world - let’s move it forward, together.
