Associate General Counsel, Autonomous Mobility & Delivery
About the Role
We’re looking for a multi-faceted legal leader, experienced in leading legal teams across multiple disciplines and partnering with cross-functional business teams, including senior-level executives, as Uber shapes its AV strategy in a rapidly growing and transforming category. The AM&D Legal team supports these businesses centrally, including for US operations and globally through collaboration with Uber’s exceptional lawyers around the world. Leadership for this legal team and the AM&D business requires a strategic approach to developing a global partnered ecosystem of AV software partners, automotive manufacturers (OEMs), fleet and depot operators, and the insurance, finance and data partners needed to accelerate and support an autonomous transportation offering of global scale and Uber quality. Scope also includes infrastructure supporting AV growth, as well Uber’s eVTOL and urban air transit business.
What You’ll Do
- Operate as a legal leader and strategic business partner, shaping outcomes and counseling large, cross-functional teams in the following: Product Development & Commercialization, Complex Commercial Transactions (US & International), IP and Data Transactions, AV Regulatory & Safety matters, Investment Transactions/M&A, Government Relations & Policy (Federal & State)
- Provide oversight and direction to to a team of lawyers across multiple practice disciplines
- Manage commercial deals end-to-end (from deal strategy to post-deal operationalization) with cross-functional input and collaboration across a wide variety of contracting structures: master framework, production, sales and services agreements, licensing, terms and conditions and other policies governing the use of Uber products and services, all with a full-view integration of strategy, risk and legal controls
- Establish standards for product and safety counseling that can scale globally, for a product that is safety-first.
- Prepare the regulatory pathways for AV commercialization in US and global environments, in conjunction with a world-class Policy team at Uber
- Understand, interpret and apply the current laws and regulations relevant to Uber’s and autonomous vehicle business models
- Collaborate closely with colleagues on other legal teams at Uber, including specialists across IP, Employment, Privacy and Data security, Litigation and Competition
- Serve a member of the AM&D business leadership team, and as an active and trusted business partner to a wide variety of leaders and stakeholders across Uber’s AV, Mobility and Delivery businesses. It's our job to peer around corners in a nascent sector and ensure that we are well-positioned for the future.
- Be a strong communicator and collaborator to support and develop a high-performing, diverse team that achieves our legal and business priorities
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of 12+ years of commercial legal experience in private practice and/or in-house
- J.D. and license to practice law in at least one state
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team of legal professionals, including a team of direct reports that include senior legal leaders expert in their own disciplines
- Strong cross-functional orientation, with confidence and flexibility to perform in nimble, rapidly changing and growing environments with multiple stakeholder-partners
- Collaborative approach with both business and legal groups, with strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and execute alongside others
- Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative to think two steps ahead while following through outcomes all the way to operational reality
- Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice, to communicate effectively with non-legal internal colleagues, and to interface with a broad range of senior business managers, executives and other colleagues and professionals across our company
- External-facing comfort, including representation across industry groups, partners and government stakeholders.
- Familiarity with commercial and regulatory structures that facilitate the sale of products and services in regulated and international markets

About the Team
The Autonomous Mobility & Delivery (“AM&D”) Legal team serves as Uber’s central legal support for its rapidly expanding autonomous vehicle efforts, transforming Uber into the best platform for AVs to go to market, globally. If you’re passionate about AVs, building the cross-industry partnerships, regulatory pathways and operational capabilities necessary to deploy and commercialize AVs at scale, creating industry-first products, and transforming the way that people go anywhere and get (almost) anything, come and join this bold team.
This committed, collaborative team of lawyer-builders has a broad focus that includes Commercial, Product, Safety, Regulatory, Privacy, IP and Data matters and provides high quality advice that ensures the expertise of Uber's entire global Legal Department is brought to bear on the partnerships, products, processes, and systems that power expanded AV offerings across Uber’s Mobility & Delivery businesses.
For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$342,000 per year - USD$380,000 per year.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$342,000 per year - USD$380,000 per year.
For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp.
