Driver protections

With Uber you get total flexibility to choose if, when, where and for how long you work, while benefitting from the security of industry-leading worker protections.

Meet the drivers behind the wheel

We’ve met up with our fantastic community of drivers to chat about their life beyond Uber and what drives them. Whether they’re supporting their families or pursuing their passions, drivers choose flexible work because it gives them the freedom to take care of what and whom they love. Get to know the people that make Uber, Uber.

Drivers now have ‘worker’ status

Uber wouldn’t be Uber without the amazing community of drivers that use our app. That’s why we know how important it is to keep you at the heart of what we do as a business, and why we’ve worked hard to create the kind of working environment you’ve told us you want.

Since March 2021, all drivers in the UK have been treated as workers, meaning you continue to have the flexibility to work on your own schedule while earning at least the National Living Wage, holiday pay and access to a pension plan. With this freedom and support, it’s the best of both worlds for drivers.

At Uber, driver satisfaction is one of our top priorities. That’s why we’re constantly looking for ways to help make your time on the road as easy and fulfilling as possible.

Earn Holiday Pay while you drive

Drivers are now entitled to holiday pay, making it easier for you to plan some well-deserved downtime with friends and family. You will get paid an additional 12.07% of your earnings, paid each week.

Why 12.07%? A worker is entitled to 5.6 weeks holiday each year. This equates to 12.07% of your earnings.

Save for your future

The pension scheme gives you a way to save and invest money for your retirement. Pension planning is important for all of us – even if you’re just starting to drive with Uber and retirement seems a long way off.

For eligible drivers who choose to remain opted-in, the scheme will include contributions from you and Uber, helping you plan ahead and build a nest egg for the future. Participation in the pension scheme will be completely optional though, so if you already have a scheme elsewhere, you’re free to opt out.

Minimum earnings guaranteed

A guarantee that you will always earn at least the National Living Wage currently £10.42 per hour (if you’re over 23), starting from the time you accept a trip on the app to the point at which the trip completes.

If your earnings over a week (after vehicle expenses and congestion charges) are lower than the National Living Wage rate, Uber will automatically ensure you receive the NLW rate through a rebate. This is an earnings minimum, not a maximum, and you will continue to have the opportunity to earn more.

Determine the estimated earnings and additional protections you’re entitled to by trying our Earnings Calculator here. The Earnings Calculator will help provide you with an estimate of your weekly earnings and protections – demonstrating what is available to you as part of our decision to treat UK drivers as workers, as well as an indication of the benefits Uber offers compared to other operators.

Get access to sickness cover or a New Parent Payment

With our Allianz insurance scheme, eligible drivers have protection from the financial cost of life-changing events, such as injury, sickness or having a baby.

Learn new skills every day

For drivers who choose to complete enough trips to reach Uber Pro status, our partnership with The Open University means that you – or a member of your family – can get access to more than 900 free courses, ranging from business management to astrophysics.

Make your voice heard

We have also joined forces with GMB Union in a groundbreaking trade union recognition deal. GMB Union will be meeting the Uber leadership team every three months to discuss driver issues and how to improve standards across the industry. If you choose to join, GMB can act as your representative and make sure the issues that are important to you are heard.

We have agreed to work with GMB as we look to continuously improve working conditions and discretionary driver benefits as well as driver safety and well-being initiatives.

Driver podcast: Behind the wheel

We want to talk about topics you care about. That's why we've launched a new Driver podcast, 'Behind the Wheel', where we will be discussing topics that matter to drivers. This monthly podcast is hosted by Tabraiz, a Birmingham-based driver that has worked with Uber for seven years, completing over 10,000 trips.

Eligibility criteria:

  • GMB membership is open to any active driver. Drivers are not auto-enrolled.
  • To be eligible for new parent payments and sickness cover, the driver must be active, which is defined as having taken 150 trips in the previous 8 weeks before a claim is made. See here for more info.
  • Open University is a benefit within Uber Pro, and is available only to drivers in the Diamond tier once they have completed 1,000 lifetime trips. See here for more info.
  • To receive pension contributions, a driver must hit a minimum time worked eligibility threshold. See here for more details.

Earnings amounts used in our advertising have been calculated as follows:

Advertised trip earnings per hour (UK cities)

"Operating costs include the cost of the vehicle, insurance, fuel and other costs. Stated trip earnings are based on median earnings per week of drivers in selected cities from 2021-10-11 to 2021-11-01 who drove a minimum of >=20 hours per week during that time. Actual earnings vary, depending on factors like the number of trips provided, time of day and location. Earnings include trip fares, some promotional offers and tips, which are provided at the discretion of the rider. Median earnings in your specific location may be lower than the city figure. Since the median is the middle, you may make more or less than the median amount.
