For several centuries Lyon has been known as the French capital of gastronomy, due in part to the presence of many fine chefs including Paul Bocuse and other gastronomes like Colette Sibilia.

1. The Traboules

There’s more to parts of Lyon than meets the eye ! The Traboules are secret passages through houses. These conduits were originally used by Lyonnais silk-weavers (canuts) to carry their goods from workshops to merchants. The Traboules also enabled the local people to escape Gestaporaids during World War II. In all, 315 passages link 230 streets and have a combined length of 50 km.

2. Restaurants

You also have to savour some famous gastronomic addresses like Paul Bocuse. If your are a gourmet person, Lyon will spoil you with its seasons of restaurants and Michelin stars. The Auberge du Pont de Collonges is popular with food lovers from all over the world ! On 2013, Paul Bocuse was given the “Chef of the Century” award. Described as the father of nouvelle cuisine, Chef Bocuse changed centuries of traditional French cooking by cutting down on the use of heavy cream and butter and by relying on the taste of fresh ingredients. He also owns several other highly-rated restaurants in the region, including the four brasseries : Le Nord, Le Sud, L’Est and L’Ouest.

The Bouchons
Saucisson and red wine are definitely a big thing here. We call “Bouchon” (cork in English) all typical Lyons food restaurants ! These small eateries serve traditional Lyonnaise offal dishes such as tripes or bone marrow. Be sure to also try a quenelle, delicate dumpling made with minced fish, chicken, meat or vegetables.

3. Parc de la Tête d’Or

Spread out over 117 ha, the Park de la Tete d’Or is the largest park in France that can be found in the heart of a city. Since its opening in 1856, the park has remained largely unchanged, with its lakeshore, zoological park, botanical gardens and large paths lined with hundred year old trees. Whether to go for a jog, take a walk, enjoy a refreshment, you’ll always find a reason to come and enjoy this wonderful park by yourself or with friends.

4. Nightlife

Lyon definitely lives up to its title as the city of lights, it is a city that bearly sleeps with endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking for a nightcap after a wonderful meal, or a crazy night out of the town, you will be sure to find what you’re looking for. Have a drink at L’Antiquaire, a classic American bar for connoisseurs of high quality spirits and cocktails, and a second one at Mama Shelter where you can also sleep for a decent price. In the heart of the new Confluence district, discover the Docks 40, a highly festive bar and restaurant with an unusual atmosphere.

5. Halles de Lyon

Lyon’s famed covered markets have been in existence since 1970 and has over 60 stalls. You can’t miss them, three wide main alleys lead to numerous shops. Many of them are star-rated by the Michelin guide. These “Halles” are named after Paul Bocuse. What can you find ? Bakers, caterers, butchers or fishmongers selling high-quality fresh products. People come here to find top-quality meat, poultry or cheese. The Kingdom of the finest local produce, the ultimate temple of French gastronomy and a few restaurants.
