UberGIVING – Els for Autism

01 April 2016 / South Africa
Featured image for UberGIVING – Els for Autism

This World Autism Awareness Day, we’re partnering with Els for Autism to support them in their mission to help people on the autism spectrum fulfil their potential to lead positive, productive and rewarding lives.

Every trip that was taken in March will have a percentage donated to this non-profit organisation through the UberGIVING program.

Uber SA is also supporting World Autism Awareness Day by lighting it up blue in in each of our cities! The teams will be wearing blue and there will be blue vehicle icons on the application. #LIUB

Want to know more about Els for Autism?

The Els for Autism global foundation was established in 2009 by Ernie and Liezl Els to focus on the issue of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This was just a few years after discovering that their son Ben was profoundly impacted by the disorder, which affects 1 in 68 individuals. In early January 2011, they embarked on a goal to create a service that would allow lower-resourced families of children with ASD in South Africa with free access to evidence-based interventions. Thus the Ernie Els Centre for Autism offers caregivers education, training and guidance in order to empower each caregiver to effectively teach their child. This is done with the guidance of best practice teaching methods via an online educational tool called Rethink First. This intervention utilises Applied Behaviour Analysis principles, which has been scientifically shown to be the most effective teaching tool for individuals with ASD.

What is UberGIVING?

Previously we automatically rounded down the value of your trip to the nearest rand. We’re now leaving the value of the trip as is and contributing the extra amount to non-profit organisations. In keeping with the business model, our driver-partners will still earn a majority of each fare. These small amounts donated from each riders trip, although a few cents here and there, when combined with riders across the country become a significant contribution. Our previous partners include Reach for a Dream, Blow the Whistle, Tomorrow Trust, Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, PinkDrive and CTCT Rotary and Pedal Power Association.
