Why I Drive: The Many Ways Drivers Use the Uber App to Reach Their Goals

August 4, 2015 / US

A recent survey of our driver-partners found that from Los Angeles, to Houston, to Baltimore there is no “typical” driver with Uber.

Some people drive toward a goal, like saving for an engagement ring or a special vacation.

Lori, a stay-at-home mom, is one of many driver-partners who use the Uber platform to save up for their family. And she’s not alone: 46% of Uber partners have children under 18 living at home.  Lori started driving so that she could send her son to an out-of-state baseball academy.

Others choose to partner with Uber because it can fit around the rest of their lives. In fact, many driver-partners have full-time careers. According to the survey results, 61% of drivers have another part-time or full-time job.

Jenny

Jenny is a math teacher in Colorado. During the academic year, her schedule varies. As she put it, “during the school year, with one week being slammed and one week being wide open—I get to pick when I want to work [with Uber], and I can still be a great teacher.”

And some people use the Uber app to grow their business.

mike

Mike and his wife own a small transportation company in Detroit. They use the Uber platform to build their business and ensure a steady stream of income. Mike estimates that he’s “probably increased his business by 60% with Uber.”

Lori, Jenny, and Mike are among the many driver-partners using the Uber platform in different ways. They are only a few of the 85% of drivers who partner with Uber to have more flexibility in their schedules and balance work with life and family.
