Valentine’s Day driver stories

It’s the time of year when many people reflect on the connections they’ve made (or lost) with others—not just romantically, but also with friends, family, pets, or even strangers. We reached out to drivers across the country, asking them to share moments of connection that happened on the road. The responses flooded in. Here are just some of the amazing stories they shared.

Meaningful moments on the road

I picked up a sweet couple and quickly noticed that they were on a first date. I asked how they met, expecting the usual type of answer. They giggled and explained they’d met at the grocery store, reaching for the exact same tomato. I’m not sure who ended up with the fruit, but they did end up with each other! —Pamela, Houston

This guy broke up with his girlfriend right before he got out of the car for his destination. She started crying and told me to take her to the next stop. She was a wreck, but I turned on a playlist of Adele songs and we sang our hearts out—“Never mind, I’ll find someone like youuuuuuuu.” She was a million times better, wiped her tears, and said thank you. A few Valentine’s Days ago, I picked up an elderly woman who struggled into my car. Her destination was an old cemetery in Newark. When we arrived she asked if I could wait for her and I said yes. I then asked if she needed additional help. She accepted my offer, and I helped her to her husband’s gravesite maybe 50 yards away. She touched his grave marker with the palm of her hand and said, “I love you.” She was ready to go home soon after that, so I helped her back to the car and back home. I met my soon-to-be husband while driving with Uber Eats. I was picking up an order at McDonald’s and while I was waiting, a tall, handsome, sweet, hungry (lol) man walked in and captured my heart. I fully admit that I’m a true believer of love at first sight. This man came in my life and changed me for the better. I’m just so happy I received that Eats request and he was hungry that night. —Shantae, Chicago

I picked up a couple that recently had twins and they hadn’t been on a date in months. They showed me pictures of the newborns and I showed them pictures of my son. At the end of the ride, the mom and I exchanged hugs and then went our separate ways. #ProudMommyMoment. It’s crazy how you can bond with someone you barely know, but we both had such a good vibe and exchange of words and photographs—it was like we knew each other for years. —Adriana, San Francisco

Recently, I picked up a young woman on a congested side street, and as she was chatting me up, the car coming toward me slowed down to let me by. The driver of the car rolled down his window and I said, “Thank you, sexy” to the driver. He smiled and winked at me. Both of our passengers were floored. As we drove away I told my passenger that that was my husband and that we both drive with Uber. She loved the perfect timing of the moment and said there is a first time for everything. —Kimberly, Boulder

It turns out that a lot can happen in a single car ride. Connections made (or broken), tears of laughter (or sadness) shed, advice shared, songs sung, and impressions made that will last a lot longer than the 15 minutes it takes to get home.
