Since the Uber app was launched in Singapore five years ago, we have sought to play our part in helping unlock Singapore’s Smart Nation aspirations and contribute positively to riders, drivers and the country. Our technology has helped hundreds of thousands of riders get around every day at the push of a button, and facilitated flexible earning opportunities for tens of thousands of Singaporean driver-partners.

We are delighted that the Government, through Second Minister of Transport Ng Chee Meng’s speech today, has recognised the Private Hire Car industry has become an important part of Singapore’s land transport system where “commuters have benefited the most” and taxi drivers are also “starting to reap some of the benefits”. For example, with UberFLASH, we have seen a 30% growth in ridership from Singapore’s heartlands and ComfortDelGro drivers who actively drive on the Uber network have increased their earnings by 19% on average, and spend about 10% more time earning fares instead of driving around looking for passengers.

In every market that we operate in, we want to work hand in hand with regulators, sharing the same goals: to improve lives and cities. As the industry continues to evolve, our commitment to work together remains unchanged. We look forward to working with the Singapore Government to continue improving the PHC industry in ways that encourage growth and innovation while maintaining safety and reliability. As an example, we have worked well with the Land Transport Authority, who has actively engaged industry members like us to improve the PDVL process.

Innovative technology can play a key role to play in improving lives and cities. Together with the Government, we can work together to unlock Singapore’s potential for everyone.
