On March 8, 2024, the Ministry of Transport published a proposal to amend OUG 49/2019, the law to which Uber services are subject to since 2020. The changes proposed in this ordinance would affect more than 90% of the vehicles active on the platform today which would not qualify to take trips anymore, according to data from the Romanian Road Authority.
As a consequence of these changes, the availability of trips via the Uber app would be severely reduced and the riders wouldn’t be able to rely on Uber’s services as they’ve been used to for the past 9 years. The changes would affect the ETA which could be as much as 2 hours, and the prices of the trips would significantly increase, making them less affordable and available.
If you’re in Bucharest you can now see a simulation of this experience by trying to order the Uber Melc product in the rider app.
Until 19 March 2024, you can submit your opinion over these amendments at this link.
Thank you for your support and for using the Uber platform.
