New Zealand music icon Stan Walker is calling on New Zealanders to take a fresh look at their wardrobes and donate their best quality pre-loved clothing through the Uber x Red Cross Clothing Drive on Saturday 18 October.

From stage outfits to everyday staples, clothes can be like a personal playlist – each piece tied to a memory or moment in time. That’s why Stan is backing the drive and encouraging New Zealanders to give those memories a new chapter and a chance for someone else to make them shine. After all, a wardrobe’s greatest hits deserve more than gathering dust, they deserve a second verse with someone who will love them.

On his involvement in the campaign, Stan says, “Clothing is tied to our stories – from gigs and adventures to the memories we hold onto. But when something no longer fits the era of your life, it doesn’t mean its story is over. By donating, you give someone else the chance to love it just as much, while supporting the incredible work New Zealand Red Cross does for our communities.”

“When we donate our best clothes, we’re not only reducing waste and clearing room for our new favourite pieces, we’re helping New Zealand Red Cross fund its vital programmes for vulnerable people facing hardship throughout Aotearoa.”

In the 30 second hero video for this year’s Uber x New Zealand Red Cross Clothing Drive campaign, Stan goes down memory lane and shares some of his most iconic fits, from the scarf and vest combo that started it all, to the leather jacket that won him best dressed on the red carpet.

Alongside donating these fits and clothes from his own wardrobe, Stan is sharing his top tips to help New Zealanders let go of their best pieces and pass them on with aroha so they can create new stories for someone else. These items will be available for purchase at New Zealand Red Cross Shops nationwide, ready to embark on someone else’s fashion era.

Latest research* shows it can take many Kiwis up to six weeks to donate their clothing, so Uber is making it easier than ever to give, ensuring your donations don’t sit around any longer. Between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 18 October, New Zealanders in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch can book a free Uber Courier pickup via the Uber or Uber Eats app, with donations collected and delivered directly to Red Cross Shops drop-off locations.

Now in its third year, the drive saw more than 42,000 kilograms of quality clothing donated last year. These donations stock Red Cross Shops with quality pre-loved clothing, with sales ensuring New Zealand Red Cross can be there when people need them most.

To help inspire people across the motu to get started, Stan has shared his personal decluttering tips.

Stan’s Declutter & Donate Top Tips

  1. Think about the new memories your clothes can bring for others: Every piece of clothing holds a story. Maybe it’s that shirt you wore to your favourite gig, or a jacket you’ve had since your first school dance. If those clothes belong to your past, donating means someone else can create new memories with them.
  2. Donate your best, not just what’s left: It’s easy to throw just anything in your donation box, but the Red Cross Shops need high-quality pieces that people will want to wear. Think of your donations like your wardrobe’s greatest hits and only donate items you’d like to buy yourself or would be happy to pass on to friends and whanau.
  3. One year, no wear: If it’s been sitting in your wardrobe for over a year without being worn, it’s probably ready for a new home. Instead of letting them sit there, donating gives your clothes a fresh start with someone else.
  4. Take it easy: Donating doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Set aside 15-30 minutes, put on some music, and fill a bag with your best clothes that you’d be happy to see someone else wearing. Then, between 10am-4pm on 18 October, open the Uber or Uber Eats app and, at the tap of a button, book a free Uber Courier pick-up straight from your doorstep. Uber is making donating more convenient than ever – because we know the biggest barrier is often just getting your clothes to where they’re needed.
