There’s always so much to experience in Rotterdam, the Netherlands’ bustling second city. This winter season is no exception, with a calendar that’s packed with things going on. From arts and tech festivals to major sporting events and subtropical themed dance parties, there’s something for everyone. We checked out the Rotterdam listings and chose a selection of the best events happening in February and March – so you don’t have to.
A weekend full of art and tech
The twentieth Art Rotterdam event takes place from 7 to 10 February. At this renowned art fair, held in the Van Nelle factory, you can absorb all the latest developments in the world of visual arts. It’s the perfect opportunity to admire the latest works by young, promising artists.
Tecchie heaven
If you’re more interested in creative tech and robotics, the TEC Art Festival is for you. From 6 to 10 February, you can enjoy a programme packed with live acts, robotics, talks, symposia, parties and exciting pop-ups at Witte de Withkwartier and the WORM and V2_ venues. If you don’t live locally and don’t fancy the hassle of searching for that elusive parking space, come by train and book an Uber from the station for a comfortable, stress-free ride to your destination. Travelling with others? You could share the ride with your fellow passengers for a cheaper fare. (It’s more sociable that way, too!)
Calling all sports enthusiasts
As well as art, culture and technology, Rotterdam has plenty to offer to sports enthusiasts. For example, from 11 to 17 February, you can admire the tennis skills of world-class players during the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. It’s one of the world’s top indoor tournaments, so you’ll want to make a day or evening of it.
Get your skates on
Prefer to move under your own steam? Show off your ice-skating skills (or take lessons) until 27 February at the Schaatsbaan Rotterdam. Afterwards, replace those burned-off calories with a piping hot chocolate and whipped cream at the delightful Koek en Zopiepleinpop-up restaurant.
Subtropical Rotterdam!
After the overwhelming success of its first year, the Confetti Winter Fest takes place once again in 2019. For one day only, on 23 February from 3pm to 1am, Rotterdam’s legendary Cruise Terminal is transformed into a subtropical party paradise. Stay warm in a cool atmosphere that’s packed with music and live performances and enjoy the venue’s infamous confetti madness! It’s time to forget the winter and immerse yourself in a totally tropical atmosphere.
Top travel tip: If you’re planning to go to one of the above events with a large group of friends, request a ride with a Van. That way, there’s no need for a designated driver!
So whether you’re into sports, culture, creative technology, art or subtropical dance festivals, Rotterdam is the place to be this winter.
