As more people have come to rely on Uber, our technology has become an important part of the transportation fabric of cities. As Uber grows, our technology can do more than just move people efficiently throughout a city—it can provide important insights to cities about their changing mobility landscape. Today, we’re excited to expand our commitment to cities even further by launching a new mobility dashboard for bikes, available to city program managers via Uber Movement. Over time, we’ll be adding new functionality to the dashboard, including expansion to scooters in the near future.

New mobility choices are growing at an exceptional rate, and each have different implications for city planners and developers. Cities are quickly determining what appropriate policy, regulation, and infrastructure changes might be needed. We’ve built a new mobility dashboard in collaboration with city leadership, program managers, and analysts so that they can use the insights it provides on ridership and utilization trends to understand the performance of new mobility programs.

It allows program managers to see relevant data such as total number of trips, first trips and miles travelled, giving an overall sense of the usage of the bikes and most popular destinations. This data is essential for cities to evaluate the success of their shared bike programs by taking into account important metrics such as bike utilization in areas traditionally underserved by public transport. This data can help cities plan bike lanes, consider other infrastructure investments to promote safety, and ensure the program is helping to provide equitable and affordable access to mobility for everyone.

We know that privacy has to be at the heart of both Uber and our city partners’ work. By providing information in aggregate both spatially and over time, we can protect rider’s privacy while enhancing the practical value of mobility data for our city partners. This is a strong first step in building out a powerful, privacy-centric tool for new mobility management.

For us, this is about more than data sharing, we’re investing in the future of cities in order to solve the real world problems. Just a few weeks ago, we announced the campaign for sustainable mobility, including a $250,000 grant to SharedStreets,  a nonprofit initiative that works to create shared standards for how we understand our streets, and added street segment level speeds data in Uber Movement, a valuable and traditionally costly dataset for cities. We’re excited to take this next step and add our mobility dashboard for bikes to our growing toolset for cities.
