We see Uber as a close-knit community. It has a unique construct because it doesn’t just cater to one customer base, but connects drivers to riders. Respect is the cornerstone that holds a community together. This is a universal truth and an important part of Uber’s culture as well. With this thought in mind, we have updated our Community Guidelines in Bangladesh this week to foster mutual respect between driver and rider partners.

While our Guidelines have always explained the kind of behavior we expect while using the Uber app, the recent update will increase accountability for riders who use the platform. The community guidelines outline the kind of behavior that will not be tolerated by either riders or drivers and which can lead to riders losing access to the Uber app permanently. While the vast majority of riders have good ratings, we notify the small number of riders who have consistently been rated poorly by drivers. We urge them to improve their behavior or else, they could lose access to the Uber app.

Many Uber drivers are entrepreneurs who have dreams and aspirations.  They work hard to earn an honest living and most of them try to do their best to satisfy their customers. Their car is their workplace. In accepting you as a rider, they agree to share their workplace as well as their personal space. We all know of driver partners who have gone above and beyond to create a five-star experience for their riders. For all their efforts in helping us reach our destinations safely and comfortably, they deserve the same respect and courtesy that we would extend to our fellow colleagues. A smile, greeting, and common courtesy goes a long way in fostering an environment of mutual respect and trust.

A few simple steps can be taken to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride for both the parties. Majority of the riders practice these small steps in their daily Uber journey, whether it be not littering inside the car, exchanging common courtesies or putting in the correct pick-up and drop-off points to ensure a hassle-free ride.

Connecting people, service, and opportunities in real-time, effectively, is a big responsibility.  Our goal for ridesharing is to create a marketplace of drivers and riders where everyone can thrive. The latest Community Guideline update is a part of our continued effort to ensure everyone has a 5-star ride because Uber is better for all when both driver and rider partners do their part.
