There’s data from the 2011 Census that shows three out of five women refrain from traveling more than a kilometre to get to work, with safety concerns being the top factor. At Uber, we want to change that, simple as that.

Safety and convenience figured as the top two issues apart from the societal and cultural reasons, forcing women to give up their dream jobs and settle for much lesser. We strive tirelessly to bridge that very gap, providing a safe and convenient means of last-mile transportation. We have over the past year bolstered safety measures on the platform by adding features such as ride check, a 24×7 safety assistance, and PIN verification among others, each of which puts in adequate checks and balances in case of any untoward incident. On this International Women’s Day, we launched a new campaign to make every destination #WithinHerReach.

We’re going to conduct a social experiment to highlight the glaring gender commute gap between working men and women. The social experiment questions men and women on their dreams and career aspirations, and how far they are willing to go to achieve it. The survey aims to bring to the fore the pivotal reasons a man considers while choosing a job, and compare it to those that a woman weighs in.

Through the #WithinHerReach campaign, we aim to change the perception of “we want our women to go far, but not far from home,” and empower women to fulfill their ambitions without any societal pressure.
