Uber has a simple goal: to provide access to safe, reliable and convenient transportation at the tap of a button, everywhere for everyone. Last month, we upgraded our safety feature and introduced an easily accessible in-app Help function. Our team in Pune has taken this one step further by partnering with the Pune Traffic Police to integrate critical real-time ‘SOS Alerts’ with their SOS Control Room.

Here’s a video that explains how it works.

We thank the Commissioner of Police (Pune), Shri K.K. Pathak and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Shri Sarang Awad for embracing innovation in technology and supporting an environment for technology-led solutions.

This is a great example of a shared collaborative framework between the Public and Private sector to develop smarter cities. As we talk about working together, the Government of Maharashtra has published a draft City Taxi Scheme, 2015 available for public comments till 31st October. If this Scheme is passed, it will destroy the Uber experience that you have come to depend upon. One of the clauses in the Scheme mandates the need for the installation of one physical panic button, per aggregator, per car. We believe that’s not the solution. Multiple physical panic buttons in vehicles may lead to confusion in times of distress.

Experts too were asked about the efficacy of our safety initiatives.“Based on my reading of the safety requirements mentioned in the Central Guidelines and the City Taxi Scheme and examination of Uber’s safety standard, it is my opinion that although no mode of transportation can be 100% secure, Uber’s safety standards are in compliance with the Central Guidelines and the SOS Alert is an effective alternative to the physical panic button required under City Taxi Scheme and emergency button required under the Central Guidelines, says the former Commissioner of Police (Mumbai) and Director General of Police Maharashtra, Shri. D. Sivanandhan.

We need your support to raise awareness about these regressive regulations and stand up against the freedom of rider choice. Voice your support now. Your right to a safe, reliable ride is one signature away.
