These are unprecedented times and it’s difficult to predict the future. Today, consumers are most concerned about health and hygiene safety, and consumer’s perception of safety will define their choices.

At Uber, we are reimagining the way the world can move forward for the better by making it #SaferForEachOther. Over the past few months, our tech and safety teams have worked overtime to build a new product experience to help everyone feel protected, every time they use Uber.

In May 2020, we launched a comprehensive set of safety measures and features. These COVID-safety features include  an interactive Go Online Checklist for both riders and drivers, a mandatory mask policy for riders and drivers, pre-trip mask verification selfies for drivers and select riders, new seat limits, and updated post-trip feedback mechanism and  cancellation policy. A mandatory safety awareness education video course has also been rolled out for all drivers.

We are also working towards installing physical markers of safety- the in-car partitions- inside cars and autos. The in-car partition is an innovative and protective ceiling-to-floor transparent plastic screen installed between the passenger and the driver. This enables social distancing even within the confines of a car. We have already installed safety screens in over 87,000 autos across more than 20 cities, and in over 43,000 cars across 7 cities. These high quality safety partitions are being installed just behind the driver’s seat and will act as an additional physical barrier between drivers and riders, keeping everyone #SaferForEachOther. So far, Uber has completed over 40 lakh trips with the safety screens in autos and cars.

Additionally, we have set up Sanitisation Hubs in the airports of Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune,  to disinfect cabs before every single trip using the state-of-the-art equipment and disinfectants. Besides vehicle sanitisation before every trip, our partnership with the airports includes decontamination of Uber’s pick up zones as well.

Complementing these measures, we have also been distributing over 3 million masks,  1.2 million shower caps for Moto riders, and 200,000 bottles of disinfectants and sanitisers to drivers, free of cost.

Uber continues to raise awareness around its various safety features among its riders and drivers, through awareness campaigns like Safer For Each Other 2.0.

As we all enter  a new normal, we want to encourage a sense of shared responsibility where Uber, riders, and drivers, all have a role to play in keeping ourselves #SaferForEachOther.
