When we introduced ridesharing to Indonesia in 2014, no one could have imagined the impact it would have.

Fast forward to today, we are pleased to say that Uber is now available in 30 cities across 7 islands: Java (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, Cimahi, Cirebon, Surakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Gresik, Malang, Batu, Banyuwangi dan Jember), Bali, Lombok, Sumatera (Bandar Lampung, Palembang, Medan, Deli Serdang, Pekanbaru), Batam, Borneo (Pontianak and Balikpapan) and Sulawesi (Manado and Makassar).

Uber is now available in 30 cities across 7 islands in Indonesia

Michael Brown, Regional General Manager, Asia Pacific, Uber, said: “It’s exciting to be serving so many people in so many cities across Indonesia.  Our expansion shows the demand for ridesharing in both big and medium sized cities, and our strong commitment to Indonesia. Uber is proud to be creating flexible economic opportunities for driver partners, helping cities tackle congestion and promoting tourism.

People from all walks of life ride with Uber out of a shared desire to have a safe, reliable and affordable ride at a push of a button from A to B. Recent research by AlphaBeta revealed that riders choose ridesharing with Uber for 5 key reasons: 1. Affordability, 2. Convenience, 3. Reliability, 4. Time efficiency and 5. Safety. Riders can save up to 65% of commuting costs and 38% of their time since using Uber.

While everyone drives for a different reason – to support their family, socialise with people, save for a wedding or help build a business – they share a common desire: the ability to earn some extra money in a way that fits around their life, rather than the other way around.

Our data revealed that for the past 3 months, 61% of driver partners use Uber less than 10 hours per week; meanwhile Alphabeta research stated that 46% of driver-partners joined Uber to benefit from its flexibility and 32% wants to earn additional income. Uber also contributes to increasing financial inclusivity of driver-partners: 6% of driver-partners did not have any bank accounts before and 39% of driver-partners they have been more financially active after partnering with Uber.

Cities also benefits from Uber’s presence, as it brings more people in fewer cars, complements public transportation, supports tourism and opens economic opportunity.

  • According to Alphabeta study, 6% of riders have stopped driving their own vehicles and 62% of them now drive less after using Uber; 20% of the trip in Jakarta and surrounding areas started and ended in underserved areas, while 8% of trips in Jabodetabek happen between 23:00-05:00; in Jakarta, our data showed 30% of trips happen between 22:00-02:00.
  • As the number of tourists traveling to Indonesia steadily rises, so does the number of people arriving with the Uber app already on their phone – maintaining the international reputation of Indonesia as a welcoming and globally connected place to visit. In the past three months, rides in Indonesia have been requested by visitors from 76 countries, with top international riders from the Singapore, United States, Malaysia, Australia and the United Kingdom.
  • Data from AlphaBeta shows that 43% of driver-partners were not part of workforce before joining Uber – among them, 28% were unemployed, 8% stayed-at-home, 4% students and 3% retirees.

By embracing new innovations and sharing economy business model, such as offered by Uber, Indonesia has the opportunity to be the global hub of sharing economy and Uber is committed to working with stakeholders and the Government of Indonesia to make this a reality.
