Hong Kong is facing a uniquely challenging time. Today, Uber is announcing a series of measures tailored to this city to support restaurants, delivery-partners and driver-partners to help them weather the economic crisis.

Supporting local businesses

Over 250,000 people in Hong Kong work in the local food & beverage industry. With many customers avoiding dining out, many small establishments are being forced to make difficult decisions. Expanding food delivery is one way for them to find additional revenue streams.

Uber Eats will be reducing the service fee for independent restaurants for three full months. We know each delivery order counts right now, and this ensures that small and independent restaurants make more from every order.

In these circumstances, maintaining cash flow and paying staff and suppliers are priorities. Restaurant-partners can now choose to receive daily rather than weekly payments, helping everyone get from one day to the next.

We are also waiving activation fees for new restaurants joining the platform, making it easy for restaurants looking for new revenue streams. With the recent expansion of Uber Eats across Hong Kong, restaurants will have easy access to more potential customers.

Supporting partners who make delivery and rides possible

We understand delivery-partners and driver-partners rely on the Uber platform to earn flexibly. We want our partners to know that we have their back. Uber will provide up to 14 days financial assistance to driver-partners and delivery-partners who are diagnosed with COVID-19 or have been asked to self-isolate by public health authorities. We hope that this will give our partners one less thing to worry about as we all pass through this extremely difficult period together.

We are always working to help ensure the safety of everyone on the Uber platform and will continue to be guided by the advice of health experts. We will continue to send reminder messages to our partners on basic steps they can take to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Increasing the safety of our users

Uber has acted across more than 60 countries to support our users including driver-partners, delivery-partners, and restaurant partners during this time. We’ve started educating users about how to request deliveries be left on their doorsteps, and have now accelerated this function with a new “Leave at door” feature at checkout to make the process even smoother. Delivery-partners can also request to leave a customer’s order at their door for a no-contact delivery. We have also reminded partners and users to avoid going online or requesting rides if they are feeling unwell.  Click here for more information on how we are actively taking steps to keep our community safe.

It is a challenging time for Hong Kong. We have a responsibility as a business within Hong Kong and have thought hard about ways to support our community of partners. As we face the uncertainty of this economic and health crisis together with our partners, Uber stands ready to continue to invest in Hong Kong, providing support, flexibility and economic opportunities to Hong Kongers.
