Best of Both Worlds: Uber + Public Transit
Written byTransportation in Hong Kong has always been a multimodal affair – you take the MTR, then switch to a minibus; you ride with Uber to the ferry pier; you take a tram and then walk. But planning your route has not always been the easiest task, as apps have traditionally kept car routing and public transit routing separate and therefore have left out the possibilities of switching between the two.
Now, technology finally reflects the reality. Citymapper now combines public transit with Uber to create new multimodal routes you never knew existed, bringing you the advantages of both, wherever you’re heading.
Here’s an example of a trip from Kwun Tong to Shek O. The trip that combines MTR and Uber arrives 30 minutes faster and requires much less walking. Plus, using this multimodal route costs around HK$80 – about HK$40 less than if you took Uber the whole way!
Many Uber riders in Hong Kong already combine public transit with ridesharing in this manner, using Uber to cover the first or last mile of their journey. Over 30% of Uber rides in the city either begin near an MTR station and end away from a station or vice versa.
With this new Citymapper feature, even more will be able to enjoy the best of the Uber and public transit worlds:
- A better connected city. Access more parts of the city that might not be well supported by public transportation.
- Reduced costs. More affordable options than taking an Uber all the way, especially for long distances.
- Reduced travel times. Sometimes trains are faster. Sometimes cars are faster. Sometimes combining them is faster.
- Reduced traffic and parking. Public transit + Uber can mean fewer cars on the road and less congestion.
This latest development is just an another example of the power of technology and data-sharing to improve transportation, which both Uber and Citymapper are strongly committed to. Citymapper leverages the power of Uber’s open API, which allows developers everywhere to bring the convenience of Uber to users directly within their apps.
