Seattle Independent Contractor Protections Ordinance
Seattle Independent Contractors have specific rights, including the right to receive a written notice outlining proposed work terms and payment conditions before commencing work, timely payment according to contract terms, or within 30 days if unspecified, and detailed, itemized payment information. Covered individuals, self-employed contractors in Seattle without employees, performing work for a commercial hiring entity and anticipating at least $600 compensation, have protection against retaliation for exercising these rights. Complaints can be filed with the Office of Labor Standards (OLS) or pursued legally. If misclassified, OLS may assist in determining employment status, with rights explained in the Worker Classification Guide. The ICP ordinance doesn’t impact employee rights. Notices must be provided in English and the worker’s primary language, and OLS offers accessibility support. Independent Contractors and Hiring Entities can contact OLS for complaint filing, legal action, compliance assistance, and training.
