At Uber, we’re always thinking about how we can use technology to help improve safety in ways not possible before. That’s why we’ve built new features designed specifically for teens and their families while using Uber.

But beyond our technology, there’s a lot that you can also do to be a responsible rider. We created a list of pro tips, prepared in partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide and law enforcement, just for you:

  1. Request Your Ride Inside: When practice is over, or you’re leaving a friend’s house, there’s no need to wait outside. Stay safely indoors while keeping an eye on your app for your driver to arrive.

  1. Protect Your Personal Information: Both you and your parent can contact your driver directly through the Uber app. We use technology to mask the real phone numbers of riders and drivers, so there’s no need to share any personal or contact information.

  1. Know Your Uber: When you request an Uber, you’re given the driver’s name, photo and license plate number in your app. Before you get in the car, check the license plate number and look in the window to make sure the driver matches the photo. When you open the door, ask for the driver’s name. Always remember that Uber rides can only be requested through the app, so don’t get into someone’s car without making sure the info matches the driver in your app.

  1. Be a Backseat Rider: Choose to sit in the backseat. This ensures you have the ability to always enter and exit curbside on either side of the vehicle after it safely stops. That way you’ll avoid moving traffic and give you and your driver some personal space.

  1. Don’t Forget—Buckle Up: You may not be in the driver’s seat, but that’s no excuse to forget the Golden Rule of car ridership. According to the Centers for Disease Control, seatbelt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries if ever a car crash should occur. So fasten that seatbelt and if you’re riding with friends, make sure everyone remembers to buckle up.

  1. Be Kind and Respectful: Please treat your driver as you would want to be treated. Be respectful of his or her personal vehicle. Our community guidelines apply to both riders and drivers.

  1. Give Feedback: Our 24/7 global support team reviews your feedback and will take action to address any issues. Your feedback helps us ensure both riders and drivers follow our community guideline to make every Uber ride a great one.

  2. Protect Your Password: Use a unique password for your Uber account and never share it with anyone else. If you ever notice unfamiliar activity on your account, let us know and we’ll help you quickly reset your password.
