In honour of UN Global Road Safety Week, we’re joining the global safety community to speak up and raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe driving.
The World Health Organization states that inappropriate speed is a key risk factor for road traffic collisions, deaths and injuries. Exceeding the speed limit, or traveling too fast for road conditions can increase your chances of being in a crash. It’s harder for vehicles to safely stop or react to changing road conditions at unsafe speeds, so traveling at the appropriate speed can help drivers successfully avoid crashes.
Whether it’s buckling up or keeping to the local speed limits, we can all do our part in keeping our roads safer. At Uber, we’re constantly working to help make our roads safer by developing innovative products that aim to increase transparency, accountability and peace of mind for everyone using the Uber app. Find out more below:

Speed Alerts
In-app speed alerts help remind driver-partners to maintain a safe speed within the local speed limits. Experts say that letting people know how fast you’re going can help you travel at safer speeds, and the Uber app brings this feature in the app and right on the map! Drivers are shown their speed in relation to the limit, which has been proven by internal research to help keep us all safer on the road.

Driving Hour Limits
Driving hours limits helps drivers to help keep track of their time, which we believe assists in making our roads safer for both drivers and riders. This feature puts a time limit on how long you can drive on Uber before having to take a break. The app will notify you of the need to take a break after 12 hours of driving, and you’ll then have to be offline for an entire 6 hour period before the timer resets. Following the reset, you’ll be able to take trip requests again.
These are just a few of the ways that we’re applying technology to improve safety – and to help drivers to optimise their vehicle to improve safety both for themselves and for their riders.
