Need to contact a rider before a trip? We’ve got you covered. Whether you need to confirm the rider’s pickup location or let them know that you’re waiting for them, you can call or text them while maintaining the privacy of your number with Uber.
What is the phone anonymisation feature?
Phone number anonymisation is a safety precaution, ensuring that the privacy of both driver-partners and riders is considered at all times. This is done by using software to connect calls between a driver-partner and a rider that anonymises both cell phone numbers.
Why is Uber making my number anonymous?
Phone number anonymisation complies with Uber’s Community Guidelines which promotes mutual respect between riders and driver-partners. This is done by ensuring that your personal contact details are protected during every trip so that there is never any unwanted contact post-trip.
How does anonymisation actually work?
Now, when a rider and driver contact each other regarding a trip, both phone numbers will be anonymised – meaning that you will no longer see each other’s personal contact details.
Do calls made through this feature cost more than a regular local call?
When a rider or driver contact each other regarding a trip, the call is first connected to the anonymisation provider, which use Ghanaian landline numbers. Thus, the charges will vary according to your current mobile phone plan.
Will I still be able to contact a rider who has lost an item in my vehicle?
If you find the item quickly enough, there is a brief window after the trip when you can still call the rider to let them know. Alternatively, you can report lost items in-app and we’ll assist you. A quick tip is to check your vehicle after each trip for any items a rider might have left behind.
If I have two phones, can I use my other phone to call the rider?
Yes, you can use a different phone than the phone you use to drive with Uber. When you try to contact the rider, the Uber app will show you the anonymised number. You can then use the phone of your choice to call the rider.
If you’re having difficulties calling the rider, issues could be that:
- Your outgoing caller ID is blocked
- Your phone number on your Uber account is not up to date
- You don’t have airtime/credit in your secondary phone.
Why can’t I SMS riders directly anymore?
In order to protect the privacy of riders and drivers phone numbers, SMS functionality has been turned off. We encourage you to use the free in-app messaging feature instead.
