Recommended Destinations Around Paris
There is no shortage of sights to see in Paris. Assuming you’ve got the big ones covered—the Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysées, Notre-Dame-de-Paris and the like—here are a few lesser known things to do in Paris.
- See the City of Light at night: Sure, you could go up in the Eiffel Tower and see the city from there—or you could pay less and wait less to go to the top of Montparnasse Tower and get an equally amazing panoramic view. As an added bonus, you can get the Eiffel Tower into your photos.
- Get a little macabre: Paris is famous for its Catacombs, a former quarry turned ossuary containing the bones of millions of Parisians. It was established in 1786 and has been open to the public for almost 150 years. It’s quite a sight to see millions of femurs and skulls creatively stacked and arranged in patterns.
- Visit Musée d’Orsay: The Louvre is the most famous Parisian museum, but to see it properly takes at least three days. Consider opting for the much smaller Musée d’Orsay instead, which boasts an impressive collection of fine art including the work of Manet, Monet, Seurat, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, van Gogh, and many, many other accomplished painters.
- View French art: Even if you don’t know French sculptor Auguste Rodin by name, you’d surely know him by some of his work. His Le Penseur (The Thinker), featuring a nude man deep in thought propping his head up with his right fist, is one of the world’s most recognizable sculptures. This sculpture, along with other famed works like The Kiss and The Gates of Hell, are housed at the Musée Rodin.
- Have a bohemian afternoon: Head to the neighborhood of Belleville to see a bustling, colorful, gritty, and artistic side of Paris. Known for being the childhood home of singer Edith Piaf, said to have been born on the steps of 72 Rue de Belleville, Belleville is a storied artist quarter. The large multi-ethnic neighborhood is also home to one of Paris’s two Chinatowns and a large bohemian population. Stop by for a drink and enjoy a slice of Parisian life.
Enjoy!
