Bordeaux is the wine capital of France, and last year the country produced 47.4 million hectoliters of the stuff—that’s 1.2 billion gallons. Only a part of that comes from Bordeaux and the surrounding Aquitaine area, of course, but it’s arguably France’s best-known wine region. And wine isn’t all Bordeaux has. It’s second to Paris for most number of preserved historic buildings in the country, and its location on the Garonne River—just downstream from the Atlantic Ocean—offers a picturesque backdrop to a day spent along the water.

What To Do in Bordeaux

Not too big, not too small. As the ninth-biggest city in France, Bordeaux is a perfect spot to take in French life. The city’s rich history and architecture makes it a must-see for visitors, while the rolling vineyards just outside of town should be on any oenophile’s bucket list. Here are some tips on what to do in Bordeaux, the Pearl of Aquitaine:

  • Walk around in the world’s largest reflecting pool: Bordeaux is home to the biggest reflecting pool in the world, the Miroir d’eau. If you’re in town on a hot day, take off your shoes and walk around in water just deep enough to cover your feet. Head there just after the sun sets to see Bordeaux’s Place de la Bourse—one of the city’s most notable buildings, completed in 1775—lit up at night.
  • Visit the Port of the Moon: Bordeaux’s old section, the Port of the Moon (la Port de la Lune), is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its Enlightenment-era architecture and urban center. Check out the buildings that earned the city its world-heritage status, and take the time to stop off at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. Catch a ballet or opera performance inside the impressive auditorium.
  • Enjoy wine culture: You can’t go to Bordeaux without dipping into its enveloping wine culture. If your time is limited and a trip out to a wine region’s vineyards is too much, consider trying out La Cité du Vin, a museum and exposition center entirely dedicated to Bordeaux wine and its history. But if you’d like to see the real thing, head out to the countryside on one of the six wine routes to sample out-of-this-world merlots, cabernet sauvignons, and Malbecs. You can take an Uber to navigate some of Bordeaux wine country’s 152,000 acres—it’s just a couple clicks away.

Enjoy!
