Uber Joins LF Presto Foundation to Advance Open Source Analytics
September 23, 2019 / GlobalFrom determining the most efficient routes to predicting rider demand, aggregated data-driven analytics are foundational to Uber’s ability to deliver seamless mobility experiences on our platform.
Powering many of our analytics services, Presto, an open source, distributed SQL query engine, enables us to quickly and reliably unlock these insights. Over the past few years, we have made several improvements to Presto such as Apache Parquet read optimizations and geo-spatial analytics, which have drastically improved SQL query performance for data analysis at Uber. Moreover, Presto’s frictionless integration with Apache Hadoop facilitates even greater functionality across our tech stack.
Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the LF Presto Foundation. As a founding member, Uber will serve on the foundation’s governing board, and one of our Presto leads will join the technical steering committee. In these roles, Uber will partner with other members of the Presto open source community to chart a course for the future development and advancement of Presto as a leading analytics solution for organizations worldwide.
“The Linux Foundation is excited to work with the Presto Project community, collaborating to solve the increasing problem of massive distributed data processing at internet scale,” said Michael Dolan, VP of Strategic Programs at the Linux Foundation.
“As a core technology underpinning Uber’s data platform architecture, Presto gives us the analytics capabilities to enhance our services with insights from aggregated data and build better products for our customers,” says Brian Hsieh, Head of Open Source at Uber. “Uber is honored to partner with the Linux Foundation, Facebook, Alibaba, and Twitter to bring the Presto Foundation to life and help create an open and collaborative community in which Presto developers can thrive.”
