Uber Eats turns 10! 1 billion deliveries and a look at Canadians evolving cravings
Written byUber Eats is marking its 10-year global anniversary after first launching in Canada in 2015—and the way Canadians order food (and almost everything else) has never been the same.
What started in 2015 as a small lunch-delivery experiment in Toronto has grown into a global platform operating in more than 11,000 cities worldwide.
From late-night comfort food to groceries, flowers and makeup, Uber Eats has become part of the fabric of everyday life and reshaped the way Canadians can order what they crave. Now operating in more than 400 cities in Canada, reaching 85% of the population, Uber Eats hit 1 billion deliveries earlier this month.
To celebrate this milestone, Uber Eats is releasing a special 10-Year Edition of its annual Cravings Report, packed with fun and surprising insights drawn from anonymized app data that reveal how Canadian tastes and habits have evolved over the past decade.
Here’s some report highlights:
- 🏆Most Polite Canadian City – The title goes to… Edmonton! Edmontonians say “please,” “thank you,” and “merci” most often over the last ten years. Ottawa and Toronto ranked second and third respectively.
- 💅 Eh-list Etiquette: The country’s top tippers over the decade include Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Halifax, Ottawa, Kingston, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Kitchener-Waterloo and London, Ont.
- 🍁Peak Canadiana: Since 2016, Canadians have placed over 30 million orders of classic Canadian fare, including poutine, ketchup chips, Caesars, butter tarts and Nanaimo bars.
- 🥣Bowls for the win: Across the whole decade, the top ten most-ordered food items include burrito bowls, burgers, chicken sandwiches, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, nuggets, chicken and rice, pad thai, shawarma, and poutine.
- 🍌 Bananas, burgers and beyond: Over the past decade, Canadians have placed 16 million orders for bananas, 60 million orders of fries and 82 million burgers.
- 🫢 Expect the unexpected: Canadians love surprises. Orders have included a space cowgirl Halloween costume, a disco ball, a monogram dragon ornament, a pickleball set, and a merry and bright Christmas dog collar.
