Supporting local restaurants and workers with Uber Eats in Canada
Written byThe incredible, hardworking people who prepare and deliver our food have been hard hit by COVID-19 with restaurants shutting down their dining areas to guests – or closing their doors altogether.
We would like to thank our many customers who have contributed to the restaurants that they love directly through the app at checkout. To date, over $430,000 has been provided to participating restaurants.
Uber Eats is pleased to match that $430,000 plus every additional dollar given to restaurants up to $1,000,000 and donate it towards the Canadian Hospitality Worker Relief Fund (CHWRF).
The CHWRF will provide one-time $500 grants to workers in the hospitality industry, including delivery people, who have experienced a loss of employment or earnings due to COVID-19 and who meet CHWRF’s eligibility criteria.
As a founding partner, we are grateful to Canadian Chefs Vikram Vij (Vij’s, Rangoli, My Shanti), Victor Barry (PianoPiano, Cafe CanCan), and Dan Geltner (Le Kitchen, Le Catering, Wonderburger) for generating awareness for the CHWRF; to the Design Exchange for administering the fund; and to all the other founding and community partners for helping bring the fund to life to help workers.
Uber Eats’ direct-to-restaurant contributions feature builds on our commitment to help our restaurant partners through these unprecedented times.
We’ve invested over $8m to date, waiving the Delivery Fee for customers on orders over $20 from independent restaurants to help demand and keep orders coming in. We’ve launched dedicated marketing campaigns in-app and via email to promote local restaurants to our users.
We’ve also waived activation fees, and increased flexibility to the platform so that restaurants have additional options, including providing pickup through Uber Eats with no fees and reducing commissions for restaurants who choose to use their own delivery staff.
To provide more immediate cash flow, we’ve rolled out a new payment option for restaurants so they can opt into daily payments rather than wait through the traditional weekly billing cycle.
To continue our focus on helping to support social distancing measures, we’ve made no-contact delivery available on Uber Eats. We are working to provide health and safety supplies to delivery people. In addition, we are sharing CDC guidance with our restaurant partners and delivery people to encourage the proper sealing of orders in tamper-evident packaging, and that areas for food pickup support physical distancing efforts.
The evolving nature of COVID-19 has made this a challenging time for many. We are committed to supporting our restaurants that are helping feed our communities.
