Uber expands rideshare across Newfoundland and Labrador
Written byToday, Uber officially expanded its ridesharing platform across Newfoundland and Labrador, offering residents and visitors a safe, affordable, and reliable transportation option at the touch of a button.
In over 140 municipalities in Canada and over 10,000 cities globally, Uber users rely on the app to access transportation options whenever they need them. Whether it’s a ride across town to run errands, to get to work or school on time, or a late-night ride home after an evening out, Uber helps riders get where they want to go. In a recent survey, 81% of Canadian riders say safety is an important reason why they choose to ride with Uber and 77% say options like Uber help reduce impaired driving.
“As we head into a busy summer season, we are excited to bring rideshare to more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Residents and visitors alike now have a safe, affordable, and reliable option to help get them where they need to go, when they need to,” said Michael van Hemmen, General Manager of Uber Canada. “And for those with a safe driving record, a flexible opportunity to earn money on their own time.”
At launch, ride availability may vary depending on the number of drivers in your area, but we’re growing every day and always looking for more to join the road. To meet the expected demand for rides, interested drivers can visit driver.uber.com to learn more about driving with Uber. We are offering a $500 incentive for eligible drivers who complete their profile and take 10 trips within the first 4 weeks.
“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and visitors alike are constantly opening the app to try and find a ride just like they can in most cities across the country. It’s time that residents across the province have the access to rideshare as they do in St. John’s to help get them where they need to go, when they need to. And for those with a safe driving record, a flexible opportunity to earn money on their own time. While the app will be available across the entire province, rides will only be available where drivers actively sign up and go online to do trips. We’re looking for drivers right across the province.”

We’re proud to have amazing community organizations like The Board of Trade, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada, and Hope Air support Uber:
“While Canadians have more ways than ever to get home safely, impaired driving continues to claim lives and cause devastating injuries. At MADD Canada, we’re working with Uber Canada to help change that. The expansion of ridesharing across Newfoundland and Labrador is another important step in making sure more people have access to safe, reliable transportation when they need it most. We’re encouraged that more local residents will have access to ridesharing because no matter where you are, every safe ride home helps prevent impaired driving.”
- Steve Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer, MADD Canada
“Hope Air supports hundreds of individuals and families across Newfoundland and Labrador each year who must travel long distances for medical care. From flights to meals, our programs ease that burden, and Uber, as our official rideshare partner, plays a vital role in getting patients safely from the airport to their appointments. With Uber expanding across the province, we can reach more people in remote and underserved communities, improving access to care and health outcomes.”
- Mark Rubinstein, Chief Hope Officer, Hope Air
”Since the launch of rideshare in Newfoundland and Labrador last year, our members have told us how pleased they are that their customers and employees have another safe and reliable way to get around. With Uber Canada now expanding service province-wide as a result of the legislative changes the province made last year, even more communities will have the opportunity to benefit. More transportation options means more people moving about—enjoying local shops, restaurants and businesses. This kind of progress brings real opportunity and we’re excited to see how this will continue to support economic growth across the province.”
- AnnMarie Boudreau, CEO, The Board of Trade
In early April 2024, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador approved Uber’s licence application. We launched the entire Avalon peninsula with our main service area of St. John’s later that month.
