In 2013 alone, more than 80 people were killed and 1,130 injured from alcohol-related collisions in Alberta*.

Studies have shown that the number of drunk driving-related incidents reduces significantly when ridesharing is introduced into a market. That’s one key reason why ensuring Calgarians have a safe, reliable and affordable ride home after a night out is so important to us.

Since our arrival in Cowtown, we were honoured to act as a safe transportation option for residents when they needed it most. On Halloween weekend, over 3,000 trips were facilitated on the Uber platform between 11PM and 3AM– the peak time frame when DUI-related events are most likely to occur.

As the holidays approach and temperatures drop, now more than ever, Calgarians need to make the right choice before getting behind the wheel. And so, on Nov 13th we headed to National on 10th with our Intoxbox breathalyzer to raise awareness about the importance of not drinking and driving.

In just one night over 400 National patrons took a deep breath and blew into the kiosk to self-test their blood alcohol level. And the best part? To ensure visitors left their keys untouched, everyone who used the kiosk received a safe ride home up to $20– on us.

“Making sure our clients have a safe ride home at the end of the night is incredibly important to us, whether they’ve had one drink or five. We’re always on the lookout to prevent drinking and driving at National, and partnering with Uber was a great way to get our guests home safe. Multiple options for ensuring Calgarians get home safe from our venues is paramount and Uber is a big part of that.” — Eddie Leung, National/Concorde Group

A big thank you to all of our partners involved, and to National for collaborating with us in getting people home safe. We hope that especially during this holiday season, Calgarians will make the responsible choice to find a safe ride home.
