Hours of service in British Columbia

September 30 / Vancouver

British Columbia law puts many limits on how many hours drivers can spend online across all ridesharing apps.

Online time includes any time you’re driving to pick up riders, waiting for riders, and transporting riders.

If you’re driving with other rideshare platforms too, you must keep track of your total time ridesharing, not just with Uber, because the limits apply to your total time.

Daily limits

  • You are limited to 13 hours online in a 24-hour period.
  • Once you reach the limit, you must spend 10 hours offline before going back online.
  • To help keep track of your online hours on Uber, the app will alert you when you’re approaching this limit and when you’ve reached it.
  • You’ll be notified when you have less than 2 hours left online, another when you have less than 1 hour left, and a final reminder when you have less than 30 minutes left.
  • The app will go offline when the limit is up. You’ll be able to complete the trip you’re currently on.
  • The app will let you know when you’re able to go back online to receive trip requests at the start of the next 24-hour period.

Other limits

Other limits include:

  • You must follow one of two Cycles. Under Cycle 1, you may not exceed 70 on-duty hours in 7 days. Under Cycle 2, you may not exceed 120 on-duty hours in 14 days and you must also be off-duty for 24 consecutive hours before reaching 70 hours on-duty.
  • There are limits on how you can switch cycles or end a cycle early.
  • You must go offline for 24 consecutive hours in a 14 day period.

If you don’t follow any of these limits, you may face government penalties and lose access to the Uber platform.

The BC Government summarizes hours-of-service rules here. Full details are in Part 4 of Division 37 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations, available here
